Player Quick Pick: Monmouth for 6/29/2014

On Sunday, Ribo Bobo returns to the track as a 9/5 morning line chalk favorite in Race 11, the Mr. Prospector Stakes. Before that is an interesting 5.5 furlong optional claiming turf sprint.

2 – Make My Saturday – Jockey Forest Boyce timed his move perfectly to bring home this four-year-old gelded son of Any Given Saturday first in a 5 furlong sprint race over the Monmouth turf in his last. Boyce should have this one in the perfect striking position and the fact that Make My Saturday won by 3 lengths in that race, meaning that he was pulling away, should give horseplayers that like him even more confidence. The morning line odds suggest he’ll go off as an overlay on Sunday.
9 – Bye Bye Bernie – This Kelly Breen trainee hasn’t run since August of 2013. Usually, I wouldn’t even consider betting on a horse going into a race off of such a long layoff, but Paco Lopez takes the call and Bye Bye Bernie is probably the classiest horse in the race. The works leading up to this have been fantastic as well. If the odds drift higher, then consider for the win slot.
10 – Stormy Rocit – Just when Paco thought that he had become the king of Monmouth, Joe Bravo returns and promptly wins 9 races out of 24 mounts. Bravo is winning races at 38%. On paper, Stormy Rocit looks like he might have trouble taking this, but Bravo will have him in the perfect position, if not on the lead, as they turn for home. If Stormy Rocit is on the lead, then Joe will probably provide one of those patented muscle home victories. Stormy Rocit is a must use and has a good shot for top honors in this.

2 – Cherokee Artist – Ribo Bobo is 2 for 2 at Monmouth, keeps Paco Lopez to ride, and breaks from the rail, but, man, there is a lot of other speed in this. Why not look to a presser type that could sit about 2 to 3 lengths off before making a move around the turn? That could be the tactic that jockey Trevor McCarthy uses aboard the David Jacobsen trained Cherokee Artist. Trying to beat Ribo Bobo might sound foolish, but Cherokee Artist, who has won close to $850K lifetime, might get lost in the betting. If so, the odds will be more than fair.
4 – Partyallnightlong – Paco rode this one to a victory in a $60K handicap in his last. The switch to Julian Pimentel won’t hurt Partyallnightlong’s chances and his record at Monmouth is stellar at 8 victories from 13 races over the dirt. If Ribo Bobo goes for the lead, expect Pimentel to put this one about a half a length behind, meaning that this Monmouth specialist will be in perfect position for the minor upset victory.

Then, it will become a question of whether or not Evolution Rocks, who has shown a ton of speed in the past, and Partyallnightlong can keep up. If that happens, it will set the victory up for the top pick, Cherokee Artist.
