Player Quick Pick: Prairie Meadows for 5/31/2014
by Ryan Dickey
Prairie Meadows 6 | 9:44 pm ET Panthers Stakes for 3 yo F going 1 mi.
This prep for the Iowa Oaks for next month’s Iowa Festival of Racing, Prairie Meadow’s richest weekend of racing, should be won by the favorite Sugar Shock. The race is on for second.
MOST PROBABLE WINNER: 1-Sugar Shock
Calvin Borel is a Hall of Fame jockey. Although there was no beating Untapable in this year’s Kentucky Oaks, Sugar Shock’s four race winning streak was snapped when Borel could only get her 22-3/4 lengths from the race winner. He got her out to the lead early, and obviously the distance didn’t suit her. She cuts back a bit to a mile here, but more importantly, Channing Hill is back in the saddle again, as he has been for six of her seven career starts. In her previous starts before the Kentucky Oaks, Sugar Shock won two consecutive G3 races, the Fantasy, and Honeybee, both at Oaklawn. This filly is much the best here. Draw a line through her Kentucky Oaks performance, and single her here as the winner. Play alone on top of exotics.
VALUE HORSE: 5-Let Her Dance
The horse that should contend for second place is Let Her Dance, who is coming of a $75 k stakes race here on April 26. Although this race is two furlongs longer than her 6 furlong victory, she has raced at a mile two back, and at 6-1 on the morning line, represents better value than the #8 Phaniebdancing, who will be the most-probable second-choice come post time. Play underneath in exotics.
OTHERS TO CONSIDER: 8-Phaniebdancing
Your probable post-time second choice is a smart option to play in exactas and trifectas. Although she is making her stakes and Prairie Meadows debut, she has the speed figures that should put her in contention, and is a much better option than half the field to hit the board. Don’t expect high payouts in exacta or trifecta pools, so playing straight ticket or partial wheel is a much better plan than boxing three or four horses.
