Player Quick Pick: Prairie Meadows for 6/28/2014

June 28th, 2014

by Ryan Dickey

Prairie Meadows race 9 | 11:15 pm ET G3 Cornhusker Handicap for 3 yo+ going 1-1/8 mi.

The third of three-straight G3 races of the Iowa Festival of racing should be an exciting matchup of some well-known 4 year olds, as well as some lesser-known horses in the older division.

MOST PROBABLE WINNER: 7-Carve

Brad Cox has gotten a lot out of this horse in his 4 year old campaign, after taking over from Steve Asmussen at the end of last November.  Carve has won two of his four starts this year, and although they were both in Optional Claiming races, his third-place finish in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap behind Will Take Charge and Revolutionary proves he can handle this field well today.  His 2014 races have been well spaced, he’s fresh, and has the same jock that has a win and that show finish at Oaklawn.  7-2 would be more than adequate odds for this horse, and should be the top-pick.  Bet him on top in exotics and in multi-race bets.

VALUE HORSE: 5-Coin Broker

The second-most noteworthy thing that Dale Romans will do this week will be running Coin Broker in the Cornhusker Handicap.  The victor of the Dale Romans vs “Indian Charlie” bout near Barn 4 at Churchill Downs saddles this 4 year old Tapit product who only had one start as a three year old, took a year and 18 days off, and last raced in the G2 Alysheba on Derby weekend, finishing third.  Although the Alysheba was his first-ever stakes race, he retains the services of Corey Lanerie who is a very solid jockey who will give Coin Broker a great shot to hit the board.  Bet in exotics, and play in multi-race bets.

OTHERS TO CONSIDER: 8-Golden Ticket

Trainer Kenny McPeek is sending his 5 year old Golden Ticket out to Iowa just two weeks removed from his 5th place finish in the G1 Steven Foster at Churchill Downs.  Although it’s not usually a recipe for success to send a horse that tired near the end of a mile and and eighth race 14 days prior into another one of the same length, this horse is the class of the field.  This will be his eighth straight graded stakes race (5 G1’s, 2 G2’s and this G3 event).  His speed figures are good enough to be a contender, and although he probably won’t win, he could hit the board and/or fill out exotics.  Bet him underneath.
