Player Quick Pick: Woodbine for 6/7/2014
by D.S. Williamson
Woodbine race 8 | 4:54 pm ET Lady Angela for 3yo F going 7f (A)
3 – She Ain’t Bad – Because of a 3 and 1 record out of 4 lifetime starts over the Woodbine artificial track, She Ain’t Bad warrants big time consideration for the win slot in the Lady Angela Stakes on Saturday. Trainer Robert Schiller is winning races at 23% and the lone loss was by a neck to Splashy Gizmo who also shows up in this. Splashy Gizmo’s form appears to have gone south while She Ain’t Bad has put together 2 victories in a row. 21% winning jockey Luis Contreras again rides.
1 – On Rainbow Bridge – There are very few things to dislike about this close to $216K winner with a record of 2-1-2 out of 5 races at Woodbine. Trainer David Coty’s percentage during the year, 5%, might be the only thing that keeps the daughter of Bold Executive from winning this. Jockey Skye Chernetz has ridden her in every race, meaning that consistency shouldn’t be an issue. If the odds drift up on her to 3/1 or more, she becomes an overlay.
8 – Splashy Gizmo – Yes, the form appears to be going south, but she might wake up in this because her last was at 1 1/16 miles and the race before that was her first after a lay-off. Now, she’s back at her best distance, a sprint. She was a neck shy in two $150K state-bred stakes races in 2013. If her form returns to those races, she could upset the chalk on Saturday.
Woodbine race 9 | 5:26 pm ET Allowance Optional Claiming for 3&up F&M going 7f (A)
6 – Sweet Interlude – Cryptic Message put a beat down on this Mark Casse trainee winning by 3 lengths in an OC $62.5K event the last time that these two met. Sweet Interlude should improve enough to make it close against that rival in this event since that race was her first off of a layoff and she’s come back with a decent 5 furlong work since that event. Expect better things from this Mr. Greeley filly.
2 – Bear’s Kitty Kitty – Trainer Sid Attard wins 33% first after the claim and Bear’s Kitty Kitty is a serious horse for the course with a record of 5-1-1 out of 10 lifetime races. Even if the five-year-old mare’s best days are behind her, she’s been working steadily for the return to the races and if Attard didn’t feel that she could do well here, he’d have put her into a lower level straight claiming race. She could definitely surprise. The presence of jockey Patrick Husbands makes her even more attractive as an overlay play.
1/1A – Cabo Queen/Railtown Girl – Cabo Queen gets blinkers and should perform much better than she did when finishing fourth by 4.25 lengths to Cryptic Message, the chalk in this, in her last. If Husbands aboard Bear’s Kitty Kitty pressures Cryptic Message early, then Cabo Queen could pull off the upset. Railtown Girl, like Cabo Queen, will benefit from any speed duel. Jockey Luis Contreras takes the call meaning that Railtown Girl is well meant. Her connections claimed her for $75K two races back and she’s not up for the claim in this. So, faith must still be alive.
