Pompano Sunday card has several plays

January 2nd, 2016

Those standardbred players looking to kick off the new year by cashing a few nice tickets should focus their attention on the Sunday evening card at Pompano Park.

Widely considered the winter capital of harness racing in warm, southern Florida, Pompano Park offers its best cards of the week on Sunday nights.

In fact, fans will not have to wait long to get treated to the Sunday feature.

The third race is the $12,000 Open Handicap for older pacers and the talented field could easily produce a sub-1:50 clocking.

Bandolito (Kevin Wallis) is no stranger to wicked fast miles. A winner 10 times in 30 starts last year for trainer Daryl Bier, Bandolito uncorked a 1:48.1 mile at Dover Downs last April. He would later face some of the best older pacers in the land at several venues and banked almost $145,000 last year.

Just to his inside is Cadillac Phil (Matt Romano) who ended 2015 with an 8-8-3 slate and earnings of nearly $100,000 from 40 starts capped by a 1:49 score. But to Bandolito'a outside are two solid older pacers, Bluehourpower (Ricky Macomber) and  Arthur Blue Chip (Wally Hennessey) who will both make their presence known in the late stages.

Then much later in the tenth, a non-winners of $3101 last five starts for pacers, take a swing at Rockavellian (Joe Pavia, Jr.) although he is stepping up in class off a setback. Last week in a non-winners of $2151 last five class, Rockavellian set fast early fractions before settling for second as the 6-5 favorite. He should be a very generous price in this spot.

Then in the finale, a non-winners of $4101 last five starts class take a shot on Blueridge Dancer (Matt Romano) steps up off a sharp 1:52.1 score against lesser. Blueridge Dancer concluded his 2015 season with a 3-6-5 slate and $35,000 bankroll from 35 starts and merits a 12-1 upset chance in a field where This Baby Rocks (Ed Hensley) looms as the odds-on choice.
