Prairie Meadows Kicked off its 2016 live Quarter Horse Meet Last Weekend
Prairie Meadows, located in Altoona, Iowa, just minute from Des Moines, kicked off its 2016 live Quarter Horse racing season on August 20.
Their annual live Quarter Horse meet, which runs through October 15, will feature 17 stakes races with over $1.3 million in purses. Last Saturday, they hosted trials for the Iowa Double Gold Derby as well as the Iowa Double Gold Futurity. Shesa Vivian, a daughter of Just Amazing Jess, was the fastest Iowa-bred in the Double Gold Derby. Lil Stepper, trained by Stacy Charette-Hill leads the qualifiers for the Futurity. Both finals will be contested on Sunday, September 4.
Trainers to watch this meet at Prairie Meadows in addition to Charette-Hill include Kasey Willis, Charley Hunt, Jason Olmstead, Tony Dean Jones, Zachary Quezada and Edward Ross Hardy. The strong jockey colony includes defending champion, Stormy Smith, Berkley Packer, Oscar Delgado, Jorge Torres and Cody Smith.

Ajs High, who has won two Bank of America Challenge stakes, is expected to return to action on September 17
Prairie Meadows will also host four regional Bank of America Challenge Championship races on Saturday, September 17, led by the 440-yard, $70,000-added Bank of America Prairie Meadows Championship Challenge. All winners of these four races will earn berths in the October 29 Bank of America Challenge Championships at Los Alamitos. Prairie Meadows hosted the AQHA national event in 2014 and horsemen and AQHA officials enjoyed having the hotel, meeting space and racetrack encompassed in one configuration.
