On Saturday, Monmouth has a 10 race card. That gives horseplayers a number of chances in which to make profits. The race that we highlight below is Race 8, a $12,000 claiming event with a purse of $18,000 on the turf. The race appears solid with 8 horses entered.

Claiming (12) 3&Up going 1-1/16 mi. (T)

2 – Millenium Lakes – 4/1 – This eight-year-old gelded son of Storm Cat, who when alive demanded a gargantuan $300K breeding fee, put it altogether in its last race, a 1 1/8 mile journey over the Monmouth turf at this $12.5K claiming level. Millenium Lakes tracked 6 lengths off at the first call and then 4.25 lengths off at the second call before making a run. The run was perfectly timed as jockey Paco Lopez got Millenium Lakes up by a neck. Victor Santiago takes over for Lopez and although he’s only winning races at 7% on the year, he has been known to do some marvelous things aboard a contender on the turf. The gelding has 8 wins from 40 lifetime races and has 3 wins from 6 races over the Monmouth turf. Santiago will have some choices after breaking from post-position 2 and the odds should be better on this one than they will be on Trusted Choice.

6 – Exeter Road – 4/1 – Exeter Road is the horse that lost to Millenium Lakes by a neck. The More Than Ready gelding has banked over $130K from 5 victories out of 32 starts. That’s not bad at all. Nik Juarez takes the call and trainer Edwin Broome is winning at 18% at the current Monmouth meet. Broome is known for saddling horses that excel over the turf. Exeter Road should be no exception in this race. It had the lead over Millenium Lakes before that one kicked it into gear at the right time for the victory. Because this is a shorter race, Exter Road’s chances of turning the tables on its rival have to be considered somewhat greater. The key will be whether or not Juarez can get the most out of this guy the way that Gabriel Suarez did in its last race. Then again, that’s the key with Milleinum Lakes. Can Santiago make the right move the way that Lopez did? If Victor can’t, his mount may not catch Exeter Road this time.

1– Trusted Choice – 5/2– The morning line odds maker believes that horseplayers will jump on the fact that Trusted Choice is dropping from the $20K claiming level to this $12.5K level. The drop is significant and this five-year-old gelded son sired by Langhfur might take a step forward, but on paper, Trusted Choice doesn’t look to have much more of a shot to win this than either Exeter Road or Millenium Lakes. The Mark Henning trainee has made its way steadily down the claiming ranks. The victory three back was off the turf and over the slop. It was also at the $30K claiming level, meaning that Hennig, for all intents and purposes, appears to be hoping that someone grabs this guy on Saturday. At the morning line odds or any lower, Trusted Choice is an underlay.
