Racing Roundtable: Farewell to D. Wayne Lukas and recapping Stephen Foster Day

July 1st, 2025

This week, the Racing Roundtable is more a debate than a forum as James Scully and Vance Hanson alone hash out the events and major races of the past weekend.

Foremost on everyone's minds is the passing on Saturday night of legendary Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas after a brief illness. While the crew discussed Lukas extensively last week following the announcement of his retirement and illness, Scully and Hanson provide some final thoughts on a horseman who changed the game and transcended it as well.

Focus next shifts to the events of Stephen Foster Day at Churchill Downs. The guys provide their takeaways from the Stephen Foster (G1), which Mindframe won over champion Sierra Leone and other Grade 1 stars.

Finally, thoughts turn to Thorpedo Anna and her rebound win in the Fleur de Lis (G2) following a lackluster performance in the La Troienne (G1). Trainer Kenny McPeek hinted he might try the filly against the boys in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) this fall if her interim form in the Personal Ensign (G1) and Spinster (G1) warrants it. But will she actually show up there?
