Saratoga Recap for July 3-5, 2026
Saratoga's opening weekend of the 2026 meet delivered fireworks on and off the track with a rare dead heat in a Grade 1-caliber turf sprint and back-to-back European raiders taking down the Belmont Oaks and Belmont Derby on the Fourth of July.
Friday, July 3 Opening Day
Schuylerville S. ($200,000): Harper's Corner, the first-ever stakes winner for freshman sire Speaker's Corner, wired the field under jockey Lopez being back in the saddle, just races after a spill. She cleared by 5¼ lengths in 1:09.96, paying $26, with Voyager second and Prime Aurora third.
Saranac S. ($150,000): With Dylan Davis sidelined as a precaution after an earlier spill, Jaime Rodriguez picked up the mount on 15-1 shot Heeere's Johnny and rallied him from last to first, running down 25-1 Blinging It Back late. Final time was 1:40.45 for 1 1/16 miles on the firm turf as Glavine, the 2.55-1 favorite, finished third.
Wild Applause S. ($150,000): Jockey mounts for the day were impacted following a four-horse spill in deep stretch. Jockey Paco Lopez's mount, I Love Giraffes, clipped heels with Pillar of Beauty and went down, bringing down Lovely Grey (Dylan Davis) and Smexy (Tyler Gaffalione) in the chain reaction. Hall of Famer Javier Castellano was taken to Saratoga Hospital for X-rays but was released and described as "awake and alert." I Love Giraffes was later diagnosed with a fractured hip and will need at least four months to recover; surgery was not required. Clear of the trouble on the outside, 2.75-1 favorite To a Flame (Jose Ortiz) ran on for a 1¼-length win over Pillar of Beauty, with Code third.
Saturday, July 4 Independence Day
Suburban S. (G2, $500,000): Phileas Fogg made all the running for the second straight year, drawing off to a stunning 10-length romp in 2:01.70 for trainer Gustavo Rodriguez and jockey Kendrick Carmouche. The 8-1 odds runner benefited when speedy rival Forged Steel was taken back early by jockey Flavien Prat. Hit Show was second, Tiztastic third.
Sanford S. (G3, $225,000): Trainer Steve Asmussen's Booked, sent off the 1.37-1 odds favorite, dominated the six-furlong test for two-year-olds under Ricardo Santana, Jr., winning by six lengths in 1:11.24. Vissino was a clear second.
Belmont Oaks (G1, $600,000): All the pre-race buzz centered on owner Godolphin's Abashiri, but it was Irish shipper Kensington Lane (23-1), trained by Donnacha O'Brien, who controlled the 1 1/8-mile turf feature on the front end for jockey Joel Rosario. She drew off by 1¾ lengths in 1:47.77, paying $48.66. Abashiri broke from the start slowly and never recovered, finishing well back. Faithful Departed rallied for second, Fitz Right ran third.
Belmont Derby (G1, $750,000): British shipper Title Role, a Simon and Ed Crisford trainee ridden by John Velazquez, just held on from West End Kid and 1.51-1 favorite Remember Mamba in a blanket finish, winning by a nose in 1:47.55. The 7.34-1 winner paid $16.68. Title Role and Kensington Lane share ownership ties through Will Stroud, giving connections a rare same-day double with European imports.
Sunday, July 5
Kelso S. (G3, $225,000): In one of the more dramatic finishes of the meet, multiple Grade 1 winner Zulu Kingdom (Chad Brown/Flavien Prat) and front-running 9-1 shot Mi Bago (Mark Casse/Jose Ortiz) hit the wire together after a mile in 1:34.08. The photo took several minutes to sort out, and the toteboard briefly flashed Zulu Kingdom as the winner before the "DH" symbol confirmed a dead heat. Zulu Kingdom returned $3.66; Mi Bago paid $8.40. Pass the Hat and Capitol Hill followed in third and fourth.
Leo O'Brien H. (NSA-G1, $150,000): Formerly the Lonesome Glory Stakes, this steeplechase event moved to Saratoga and received a new name with a new course record to brag. Irish-bred McTigue (Cyril Murphy/Graham Watters) rallied to win in 4:30.45 for about 2⅜ miles over hurdles, taking advantage of the weights to beat favored Rocket One by a length.
Harvey Pack S. ($200,000): New York-bred Twenty Six Black, the 1.65-1 favorite, rolled from off the pace under jockey Manny Franco to win the 5½-furlong turf sprint by 2¾ lengths in 1:00.49. Defending champion Bring Theband Home set the pace but faded to sixth.
