Churchill Downs Recap for June 27-28, 2026
Dubai World Cup winner Magnitude put on a wire-to-wire masterclass in the $2 million Stephen Foster (G1) Saturday at Churchill Downs, earning his place among the race's storied champions. Overcoming a brief break through the starting gate before the race, the 5-2 second choice clipped off unpressured fractions under jockey Jose Ortiz and spurted three lengths clear in the stretch before holding on by 1¼ lengths over the late-rolling Baeza. Reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty, the 4-5 favorite, was another four lengths back in third after failing to find his best kick in the stretch. White Abarrio was fourth.

The victory was the 45th running of the Foster and made Magnitude the first gate-to-wire winner since Hall of Famer Gun Runner, also owned by Ron Winchell and trained by Steve Asmussen, prevailed in 2017. Asmussen also took the race in 2008 with Dubai World Cup winner Curlin. Both Curlin and Gun Runner went on to be named Horse of the Year.
Magnitude, who already knocked off global superstar Forever Young in Dubai 91 days prior, now has his own compelling case. The first prize of $1,238,000 lifted his earnings to $9,782,365, ranking 17th all-time. He heads to the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland with his "Win and You're In" bid in hand, and a nod at the history behind him.
"What an amazing horse," said Asmussen, collecting win No. 11,267. "He just keeps living up to the hype."
Can Sovereignty bounce back at Saratoga, or has Magnitude seized control of the Classic picture for good?
In the $483,500 Fleur de Lis (G2), Godolphin's Immersive ground out a gritty three-quarter-length victory over the stubborn Shred the Gnar to earn an automatic Breeders' Cup Distaff berth. The Brad Cox trainee, a two-year-old Juvenile Fillies champion who had been seeking a return to a top level, appears to have finally found her ideal trip at 1 1/8 miles. Morning-line favorite Splendora scratched off the sloppy track, keeping the Distaff picture wide open for the summer.
The turf card belonged to Steve Asmussen and the Ortiz brothers. Lagynos extended his winning streak to five in the $500,000 Wise Dan (G2), working past the field to win by three-quarters of a length over Mercante and push his earnings past $2.6 million. Favorites swept all four grass stakes on a course that remained good despite the rain: Alpyland dominated his rematch with Immortalised in the American Derby; Tam Tam obliterated the Tepin S. field by 5¾ lengths in a stakes-record time of 1:35.36; and Pin Up Betty became the Anchorage S.'s first two-time winner under Flavien Prat.
Sunday's closing-day card at Churchill produced its own fireworks.

Brad Cox's Deep Flame, a Juddmonte homebred by Into Mischief, kicked away by 5¾ lengths in the Maxfield (G3) in just his fourth career start, looking every bit the horse to follow through the summer. Nu What's New wired the Hanshin (G3) for trainer Jimmy DiVito, holding off a final charge from retiring legend Corey Lanerie aboard Coal Battle. Lanerie, the second-winningest rider in Churchill Downs history with 1,245 wins under the Twin Spires, was honored with a ceremony befitting a career-long commitment to the track.
The biggest shock of the weekend came in the Bashford Manor S., where 31-1 longshot Blessed Flyer stormed from last to nip He Is No Lie at the wire and return a record $65.82, the largest win price in 125 years of the race. He Is No Lie, who came close to giving freshman sire Early Voting his first stakes winner, was done in by the hotly-contested pace. Blessed Flyer is a Dialed In colt whose sire had a runner place in this race, is now 2-for-2 and a closer to watch. In the Debutante S., unbeaten filly Pierette moved to 2-for-2 with a sharp score under jockey Jose Ortiz, staking her claim as one of the top juvenile fillies heading into Saratoga.
