No better way to kick off the year than with a great stakes event. Forty of the best distance greyhounds around will be competing in the 2017 edition of the bestbet Derby. This even will run over 660 yards and the qualifying rounds will be January 16th, 20th, 23rd, 28th, and the finals will run on Saturday evening February 4th. Let’s look at the first-round races and see if we can get you some winners on this Monday!

First round of the 2017 $20,000 bestbet Derby

Race 7 – The class should rise to the top in this effort. Pat C Dashboard and Easi Ted are both solid grade A greyhounds that have really been running well as of late here at bestbet Jacksonville. To me this is a pick’em kind of opportunity, but the slight edge goes to Dashboard as he has been running 660 more consistently as of late. Ted did win the 660 Holiday stakes race and the good post could get him over the edge as well tonight. Others to consider here are the well posted early threat Gs Carrie from the rail, and the always DQ, always closing runner Mr Tito. (8-3-1-2)

Race 9 – The inside is the place to be in this effort as the class and the early speed resides there. This will be a heated contest from the get go, and whoever can get their nose in front early on will have a good chance as stealing away the victory in this effort. My call is Omega Point. This greyhound has been getting most consistent as of late, and it is hard to ignore the 3 wins from similar posts. Early speeder Gs Carina will force the pace throughout, along with Temp Rock from the 1 box. Late all need to pay attention to former puppy stakes winner Pat C Outbounds, as she is rested, ready, and will come flying up late to challenge. (2-7-3-1)

Race 11 – Class again is the play in the 11th race. Lee Trinity is hot off a win last time out in grade A, and looks to back that up with a repeat performance. Posted well and running tough as of late, you should like her chances here. The fastest of the fast at Jacksonville, needs to remember that in round 1. Barts Risingstar is a monster when he wants to run and tonight could be that night. He can flat out fly late and no lead is safe. If he wants to go, the race here could be for place. Keep an eye out for Cbj Sooner, who has done well in both of his 660 trips, and Ww’s Associate is the other solid grade A router in this bunch. With the 1 box, and a good start, she could be upset minded in this effort. (i.e. 5 of her 6 starts, have been in the 37 second range.) (6-7-4-1)

Race 13 – Experience is the key to success in this one. Forget the lines, forget the post, just focus on one thing… Stakes winner Herstal. Now I know that win came over 770, but she can go 550 too and with early speed on either side of her, she will come out of the box closer and take down the leaders before they hit the wire. Setting the pace should be the trio of Gs Hal, and Ww’s Epic from the outside and Boc’s Sweetpeach from the rail. Any of these three could hit the lid and wire this field on the lead, but if Herstal is close, none of them have enough left late to get the job done. Watch for an exciting finish to this one as it might just take a photo to get just who won at the wire. (6-7-1-8)

Race 15 – Most of the races have a couple of different possible outcomes, but the nightcap should be a one-shot winner. Lk’s Centuria is the best 660 greyhound going right now. With 4 wins in a row, and 5 in her last 6 starts, she is a box to wire winning machine. She is not short either and can win from just off the pace as well. She has not only been winning races, she has been dominating fields. Posted up well inside again in this effort, look for another strong break, and a statement that says, “The road to the crown, goes through me!” Others could be around early to threaten the front end like, solid grade A Ww Great Wall and loving the new distance runner Pj Just Cruisin, but neither have enough late to hang with the big dog. Another to consider in this race is Pat C Merlin. A recent addition to the 660 ranks, this even runner should be a solid play under on your tickets. (3-6-2-5)

Round 2 runs this Friday January 20th at bestbet Jacksonville. All five fields of greyhounds will be back for another run before the total is trimmed heading into round number 3.
