Santa Anita - Charles Whittingham Handicap, May 24, 2014
Santa Anita 7 | 7:00 pm ET
G2 Charles Whittingham Hcp for 3&Up going 1-1/4 mi (T)
The pace set up in the Last Tycoon was not ideal for QUICK CASABLANCA, but the classy horse was able to overcome it and win by a head at 16-1. The Chilean-bred won't be anywhere near that price in the Whittingham, but he gets a better set up for his late run and will be hard to hold off. Jockey Corey Nakatani may have sensed a slow pace in the Last Tycoon and put JOELITO just a half length off the pace after a half mile. That; however, proved to not be the right spot and JOELITO weakened late to finish sixth. A quicker pace and a more patient ride by Corey will put him squarely in the mix. He is a must use in any pick 4 wager, especially at his 9-2 morning line. If you like to bet speed horses, BRIGHT THOUGHT is the right horse for you. By Hat Trick, BRIGHT THOUGHT has been first or second after six furlongs in seven of his 11 career starts. The concern is that with other speed in the race from SOI PHET, FIRE WITH FIRE and SEGWAY, any horse on or near the lead with not be around to battle for the win at the end. Of those SEGWAY is most likely to take back and sit a stalking trip. The same trip that is projected for AFRICAN OIL, who will be ridden for the first time by Kent Desormeaux, a jockey known for blowing up the tote board in stakes races.
