Santa Anita - Santa Lucia Stakes, April 20, 2014

April 20th, 2014

Santa Anita 8 | 7:09 pm ET Santa Lucia for 4&Up F&M going 1-1/16 mi

It's not often you get a horse at 1-5 on the morning line, but that's what you get in the Santa Lucia on Sunday at Santa Anita. Of course it's not often you get a two-time Breeders' Cup winner entered in a $75,000 stakes race. BEHOLDER has not won a graded stakes in 2014 making her eligible for this restricted stakes. She should have a huge year and this will get her on track. Of course, all horses are beatable and BEHOLDER is likely to be bet down to unplayable odds. The daughter of Henny Hughes does seem to need a start before showing her best so let's try to beat her with the half sister to the great Zenyatta, EBLOUISSANTE. EBLOUSSIANTE started her career with two straight wins then came unglued in New York last July before coming back to finish a disappointing second in February. She needs to step it up to beat BEHOLDER, but the breeding gives her every right to do so. MAGIC UNION is the third pick coming off a second place finish to Close Hatches in the Grade 2 Azeri. Close Hatches came back to win the Apple Blossom in her next start. With BEHOLDER is all about speed and if no one goes with the favorite early, the others will be battling it out for second. The Santa Lucia is the fifth leg of the pick-6 wager, which has a mandatory payout due to Sunday being closing day at the Arcadia track. The track's Spring Meet gets underway on April 25 and runs until June 29, taking over days that were once run at Hollywood Park.
