Saturday's notable 2-year-old maidens: 3rd at Saratoga

Wingman is a Haynesfield half-brother to Met Mile (G1) winner Divine Park (now famous for siring Lady Eli). Bred by Brereton Jones, he sold for $300,000 as a Keeneland November weanling. His first-crop sire recently registered his first winner here at the Spa. His dam, the Ascot Knight mare High in the Park, descends from the same female line as Sardula and Imperial Gesture. Wingman fired a couple of bullets at Belmont before continuing his training at Saratoga for Michael Hushion.

Smart Moon, a $500,000 Keeneland September purchase, is by Malibu Moon and out of Alcibiades (G1) runner-up Be Smart. The mare is a Smarty Jones half-sister to multiple stakes-winning sprinter Road Ready, from the family of Buddha. The John C. Oxley colorbearer has been working smartly for Mark Casse at both Keeneland and the Spa.

Set the Trappe is by freshman sire Trappe Shot, a son of Tapit who has already made a splash commercially. Case in point is this Glencrest Farm-bred, who brought $300,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga last August. A half-brother to multiple stakes-placed Brimstone Island, he is out of a Broad Brush half-sister to Grade 3 winner Hair Spray. Set the Trappe's second dam is Black-Eyed Susan (G2) heroine Miss Legality. Yet another to be training well, the Tony Dutrow juvenile posted a bullet five furlongs in 1:01.44 on the Oklahoma August 2.

The Chad Brown-trained Economic Model is a Flatter half-brother to two stakes winners -- Grade 2 turf queen Well Monied and Jimmy Simms, also best known for his turf prowess. The $150,000 Keeneland September yearling was produced by the Quiet American mare Queen of America, from the family of Grade 1 victress Nany's Sweep.

Another Flatter is Deserved, a Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider homebred from the Bill Mott barn. He is out of an Awesome Again half-sister to Grade 2 turf winner Brilliant, with Street Life and Grade 1 victor Furiously also close up in the family.

Toughest 'Ombre has a pedigree oriented toward early success. His sire Tale of the Cat strikes with 16% of his firsters, while his dam, multiple stakes winner True Sensation, captured the Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship. But trainer Tom Albertrani is patient with his debuters, so nurture may get the upper hand over nature here.

Calumet Farm's homebred Star Hill is a half-brother to Canadian champion filly Leigh Court and German Group 2 winner King of Sydney as well as a full brother to multiple Canadian stakes scorer Barracks Road. The beautifully bred son of Elusive Quality is out of a French Deputy half-sister to multiple Group 2 hero Sure Blade. Although trainer Rusty Arnold wins with only 3% of his debutants, Star Hill did work a bullet half in :48.20 over the Oklahoma training track and could show more than expected.

Similarly, Tarpon Bay Road is a well-bred prospect from the barn of Brendan Walsh, who has the same low strike rate with firsters. The Tapit colt is the second registered foal from Grade 3 winner Pretty Prolific, and his third dam is champion Waya. His intriguing pedigree sports inbreeding to Seattle Slew as well as to full sisters Preach and Yarn.

Bayou Banker, a May 5 foal, nonetheless brought $275,000 from West Point Thoroughbreds at OBS March. Appropriately enough a Louisiana-bred trained by Dallas Stewart, he is by Super Saver and out of the Grade 2-placed Miss Marcia. The mare is herself a Mr. Greeley half-sister to graded performers Marcie's Ensign and Always Running.

Congrats Kid is bred to be quick, as a son of Congrats and multiple Grade 3-winning sprinter Feline Story, who landed the Astoria and Sorority (G3) during her juvenile campaign. But the Robsham-bred actually declined in price from his weanling and yearling days to this year, when he sold for just $9,000 at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May. That casts some question marks over how the May 8 foal is progressing.
