Scully: American Patriot, Sea Calisi key to late Pick 4

One thing missing from Saturday’s four International Festival races at Arlington is short fields and I will take a swing at the $200,000 Guaranteed TwinSpires.com Late Pick 4 that encompasses the sequence.

Here are my thoughts:

American St. Leger (G3): Da Big Hoss (#5) is a must-use at low odds in multi-race wagers and I’ll spread with Euro invaders Wasir (#6), Clondaw Warrior (#8) and Billabong (#10).

Secretariat (G1): American Patriot (#2) has really come on since adding blinkers two starts back and I hope to get a price similar to his 5-1 morning line for straight wagers; he’s a horse I’m looking forward to playing today. The Todd Pletcher colt will be singled on the back-up Pick 4, and Long Island Sound (#8) and Beach Patrol (#9) will be added to the main ticket.

Beverly D. (G1): Sea Calisi (#13) is clearly the one to beat – she’s the most likely winner in the sequence for trainer Chad Brown and will be a heavy favorite. Pretty Girl (#14) is eligible to outrun the 15-1 morning line price in her U.S. debut and I’ll also spread with Belmont Oaks (G1) third-placer Coolmore (#6) and Modesty (G3) winner Faufiler (#12) on the back-up ticket.

Million (G1): Mondialiste (#9), who ran huge in a pair of North American appearances last fall and exits an encouraging runner-up effort in a Group 2 English event, is my top choice and I’ll include the well-respected Euro invader Tryster (#12), the 7-2 morning-line favorite, in both Pick 4s. Likely pacesetter Take the Stand (#7) offers some appeal at long odds and will be used on the main ticket along with the more fancied American-based horses, Wake Forest (#10) and World Approval (#11).
