Scully: Pick 3 play on Kentucky Oaks Day

Friday’s program at Churchill Downs features plenty of star quality. Three-year-old fillies take center stage in the main event, the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1), but there are a ton of great horses on the undercard, including Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna, Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) runner-up Fierceness, Santa Anita H. (G1) winner Locked, and multiple Grade 1 winner She Feels Pretty.
I will look to build the bankroll in an earlier sequence, playing a Pick 3 in races 3-5.

- Race 3
#6 World Beater (6-1) exits a pair of encouraging performances on turf, finishing a close third at Gulfstream Park and a rallying second at Keeneland last out. #3 Profound (4-1) got bet down in her debut last summer and appears to be training forwardly for return; dangerous for Cherie DeVaux/Jose Ortiz. I’ll include Irish import #10 Some Performance (9-2) and #11 Vivaldi (5-1), a Chad Brown-trained filly adding Flavien Prat off a runner-up effort.
Race 4
I’m keen on #9 Mindy’s Union (8-1) following a sharp maiden win over Atarah, who came to beat a salty group at Keeneland and will be a stakes type in my estimation. Mindy’s Union returned from a six-month layoff last time, making only her second career outing for Lindsay Schultz, and I expect her to keep advancing with another strong showing Friday.
Race 5
#7 Lush Lips (7-2) is my top choice; she’ll improve in her second stakes attempt for Brendan Walsh following a good second in the Florida Oaks (G3), and she figures to show speed from the break. Both Mark Casse fillies, #2 Vixen (3-1) and #5 Nitrogen (8-5), will be included, and #8 Will Then (9-2) offers appeal off three consecutive wins.
