Searching for value in the Silverbulletday Stakes

January 13th, 2021

A very good field of nine 3-year-old fillies will go postward in the $150,000 Silverbulletday S. at Fair Grounds on Saturday. The cast is led by a pair of impressive performers to date, #1 Souper Sensational from the Mark Casse shedrow and Brad Cox’s #9 Sun Path. Each of those well-bred chestnuts exit eye-catching tallies, and while it would be of no surprise if one or both of the sophomores delivered a top showing on Saturday, I have a filly of excellent value that I will base many of my wagers around.

The Chris Block-trained #3 Charlie’s Penny is my selection. Bred in Minnesota, the Lothenbach Stables homebred has impressed me in her two tries on the dirt, led by a stylish allowance win at Churchill Downs two prior. The daughter of Race Day overcame a poor break to be a clear third when going 6 panels in the Letellier Memorial S. on the surface most recently, and I envision her improving with a start on the local strip under her belt.

Charlie’s Penny is a full-sister to 2019 Arlington-Washington Lassie S. queen Mom’s Red Lipstick, and she has proven to be a precocious one herself. The gray will stretch out to a route of ground for the initial time on Saturday, and her running style suggests that she will thrive with the added ground in the affair. The filly has tactical speed and a good post draw to track the pace while saving some ground to the turn for home, as well.

Brain Hernandez Jr. will guide the filly for her two-turn bow, and I envision Charlie’s Penny to be a menacing force in the stretch at a square number. She is my top value play, and I will be betting Charlie's Penny to win the Silverbulletday S.
