Selections and wagers for the undercard stakes at Oaklawn on Saturday

March 11th, 2021

The $1 million Rebel S. (G2) headlines a major afternoon of racing at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. A total of five black-type races are on the slate, and my focus for this piece will be on the trio of listed stakes events. I am interested in three price horses that will be value exotics contenders, in the very least.

Temperence Hill S.

The 1 1/2-mile marathon attracted 10 in what appears to be a good betting event. #9 Lone Rock (6-1) gets a tough post near the outside, but I love his current form and expect the gelding to be a major player in his first try at the distance. Majestic Warrior six-year-old has good tactical speed to help offset the outer draw with David Cohen riding.

Wagers:

  • $10 win and place: #9 Lone Rock ($20)
  • $1 exacta: 9 with all ($9)
  • $1 exacta: All with 9 ($9)

Hot Springs S.

They may have to rename this event in the future if #6 Whitmore (8-5) wins the dash for a fifth consecutive season. The ageless eight-year-old loves Oaklawn Park with a special 14-9-4-1 local line, but he will have his work cut out for him this season in a field that attracted a fine cast.

With an expected swift and contested early pace, I believe that #4 Engage (8-1) will have the right set up to put his best foot forward off the short absence. The 2019 Phoenix S. (G2) victor has had excuses in his last trio of assignments, and I think he just needs a bit of racing luck to be a factor at a price under Talamo.

Wagers:

  • $10 win and place: #4 Engage ($20)
  • $3 exacta key box: 4 with 2,6,7 ($18)

Essex H.

A well-matched field of seven will go postward in the 1 1/16-mile dirt test worth $500,000. I have always been curious to see how Grade 2 winner #6 Green Light Go (6-1) could fare going two turns and the son of Hard Spun will get his chance on Saturday. The four-year-old colt, who was an even fourth in a recent allowance sprint off the nine-month absence last time out, has trained well this season and is eligible to take a big step forward second off the break. If Arrieta sends him from the break on the stretch out, then the colt will be the one to catch throughout at a fair number.

Wagers:

  • $25 win: #6 Green Light Go ($25)
  • $1 trifecta box: 4,5,6,7 ($24)
