Signals Indicate Untapable Could Return to Brilliance in Personal Ensign

Untapable, last year’s Eclipse Champion 3 year old filly, has had tough time duplicating her 2014 form during this season. After such a dominating year that saw her win four grade ones, including the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and Kentucky Oaks, hopes were high that she would continue that success over into 2015. Thus far, that hasn’t been the case as Untapable has only found the winners circle on one occasion.

Today, Untapable will be looking to rebound in the Person Ensign Stakes, at Saratoga, and there is reason to believe that her chances are quite good. During first half of her sophomore year Untapable’s races came like clockwork, spaced 5 weeks apart. During that time her numbers steadily climbed. Her Bris and Beyer numbers from the Rachel Alexandra to the Kentucky Oaks are as follows, 96BSF-100Bris, 102BSF-107Bris, and 107BSF-108Bris.

By her numbers and performances, it was clear she liked the closer spacing of her first three races. It wasn’t until her connections lightened her racing schedule that we saw a drastic drop in numbers. From the Kentucky Oaks to the Mother Goose, Untapable was given an eight week hiatus. While the win looked dominant, he numbers dropped drastically. She was given a 96BSF and a 101Bris Number, which was a 9 point drop by Beyer standards and a 7 point drop by Bris. Her numbers didn’t show an improvement until the Breeders Cup, which came about six weeks after a one lengths score in the Cotillion, at Parx.

This season Untapable has shown the same tendencies.  After about two and a half months away she finished a lackluster second in her 2015 bow, the Azeri Stakes. After a quick four week turn around for the Apple Blossom Handicap Untapable returned to her winning ways. Since that day the turnarounds for Untapable’s races have both been eight weeks. Today however, her turnaround will be nearly four weeks. If her past performances are any indication, Untapable should be ready to fire.

She will be facing some tough opponents, including Delaware Handicap winner Sheer Drama. That one is looking for her second consecutive grade one win. Sheer Drama has also been exceptionally consistent this year, never finishing worse than second this season. Untapable will also face Stopchargingmaria, who defeated her last out, in the Shuvee. However, if the Untapable from 2014 can resurface then there is no filly that can compete with her today.

Let us hope that we get to see the brilliant Untapable we saw in 2014, and that she returns today at grand old Saratoga.
