SOUTHLAND Preview - Friday evening, August 28
Welcome to another Friday evening card of exciting greyhound racing at Southland as there are 18 entertaining races on tap for our viewing and wagering pleasure. MoneyMaker Mike's picks for this card will be greyhounds that finished in last place last time out but have a decent chance of coming right back with a really big effort while returning a nice profit to you. Greyhounds that are coming off last place finishes are often overlooked when handicapping a race so there will be times when you can really get nice odds on some of them. Race 3 - 583 yards - Grade M - BRASKA STAR - 4 box - This will be her 3rd official start and as she ran 5th in her first one and 8th last time out. In defense of her last place effort, she was bumped on the break and hit in the first turn so I'll overlook that one because in her 3 schooling contests she came away with a win and two second place finishes. She's a rail runner who has shown to have good early speed, if she hits the lid here and can avoid trouble early, she'll have a darn good chance of a money finish.
Race10 - 583 yards - Grade AA - WESTERN ROAD - 7 box - Here is a greyhound who has been extremely consistent this Southland season as evidenced by his 29 top four finishes in 36 races. Yes, he did run 8th last time out but before that, in his 5 previous races in this top grade class, he came away with 2 wins, a second, a third and a fourth place effort. Has an inside running style and since the greyhound in the 6 box also likes the rail it should help the 7 right from the start. I'm looking for Western Road to come out fast and be in good position early to challenge for the win.
Race16- 703 yards - Grade B - GS ANTHONY - 7 box - He is coming off an 8th place finish but notice that he was only 5 lengths off the winner at the wire. This greyhound has been as high as Grade AA so I look for a big effort from him here in Grade B, he may not be among the early frontrunners but he does have the ability to make a nice late move down the stretch so worth a shot here.
