Spiraling Toward a Winning Day at Turfway Park

March 21st, 2015

If you’re the type of person who doesn’t like when tracks stack their biggest days with nothing but stakes, then Spiral day at Turfway Park is for you.

The $550,000 Kentucky Derby Championship Series race (click for FREE Brisnet.com Ultimate PPs) anchors a 12-race card that also includes the Bourbonette Stakes as a prep for the Kentucky Oaks, but otherwise the other 10 races wouldn’t be confused for big-day racing by any means.

And that’s OK. There’s a good mix of bread-and-butter winter (early spring)-type races along with decent maiden special weight and allowance races that kick off a $.50 Pick 5 that features a $5,603 carryover.

Turfway Park has one of my favorite wagering menus: rolling $.50 Pick 3s along with Pick 4s in succession (races 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12) rather than on top of each other, and that aforementioned Pick 5, so it will be hard for me to stay away from the multis today, BUT the best opportunity of the day might come in the graded stakes double where near-full fields in both added money events are likely to create some juicy combinations.

Here is my ABC grid for today’s card (before scratches). We’ll definitely be leaning on the “A” picks early to build our bankroll and hopefully get to take a decent swing at all the bets that go through the two stakes.

One horse I’m not nearly as keen on in the Spiral as some of my colleagues are is Dubai Sky, who I just can’t play as a second tier choice considering his running style from that post needing so much improvement to be a contender. But if you want to hear/watch why James Scully and Danny Zucker like him, then watch the video and listen to the podcast below, respectively.
