Spot Plays for 2026 Kentucky Downs Labor Day card

Kentucky Downs will conclude Labor Day weekend with five lucrative turf stakes Monday, highlighted by the $2 million Mint Millions Invitational at a mile. I will look to play three of the stakes and recommend another spot play on the undercard.

Race 7: Juvenile Fillies, 4 p.m. ET

Out of a turf stakes-winning dam, #11 Early Autumn (8-1) looked promising when winning at first asking sprinting over Saratoga’s turf in mid-August. And I’m excited to see her stakes debut Monday. The well-built chestnut did not break well in her lone outing but advanced smartly into contention on the far turn, and Early Autumn closed powerfully between rivals to comfortably prove best late, finishing full of run as she appeared to just be finding her best stride approaching the wire. The John Servis-trained daughter of Violence should appreciate the stretch out to a mile, and Early Autumn is eligible to break better the second time out with Jose Ortiz picking up the mount. 

Race 9: Gun Runner, 5:10 p.m. ET

There’s some speed signed on for the one-mile test for three-year-olds, with 3-1 morning line favorite Touch of Fire, Conducted, Mr. A. P., and Street Beast among those who want to be on or close to the early lead. #6 Bottas (4-1) rated midpack before launching a winning move in the Hall of Fame (G2) at Saratoga last out, and the stalker appears to be coming to hand at the right time for Miguel Clement. Jose Ortiz picks up the assignment on the progressive son of Vekoma. 

Race 10: Mint Millions (G3), 5:45 p.m. ET

Multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Formidable Man is the class of the field, but the five-year-old exits a disappointing third at odds-on in the Eddie Read (G2) over his favorite course (Del Mar) and has never raced at Kentucky Downs. I will try to beat him at short odds, utilizing multiple runners for multi-race wagers, including #6 Giacoso (30-1).

A multiple graded winner last season, Giocoso ran well when trying the turf at Kentucky Downs last year, finishing a close second in the Gun Runner. He needed a few starts before finding his best form last year, and the four-year-old came back slowly this season, recording unplaced finishes in his first two outings. Giocoso started to turn things two starts back, winning a Lone Star Park stakes in late June, and exits a better-than-it looks third in an Ellis Park stakes where he blew the break. He faces a major class check, but Giocoso looks poised for his best and will offer value for any vertical exotics.

Race 13: Allowance, 7:21 p.m. ET

Third in Twilight Derby (G2) and Mathis Mile (G2) last year, #1 Namaron (12-1) returns from a freshening after a pair of troubled off-the-pace trips versus allowance rivals this spring, missing by a combined 1 1/4 lengths. In the last start, he experienced a rough start and traffic issues on the far turn, leaving himself too much to do in upper stretch but rallying well to be close. Those efforts dirty up his form; Namaron ran well when employing early/presser tactics last season and given his sharp workouts in preparation, he should be more tactically placed during the opening stages. And I like seeing the hot-riding Joel Rosario (leading rider at Kentucky Downs previously) take over the assignment.
