Spot Plays for Goodwood, Saratoga Aug. 1

Saturday is a notable day of racing on both sides of the Atlantic. In England, the Goodwood Festival concludes its five-day run, while stateside, the Jim Dandy Day card at Saratoga will see a lot of promising debut runners unveiled throughout the afternoon. I have one British Bankroll play on the feature at Goodwood, and spot plays on a trio of the maiden offerings at Saratoga. 

After a pair of fourth-place finishes on Wednesday’s Goodwood card, the British bankroll stands at $1,338.75. I will play $67, or 5% of the balance, to win on the following selection.

Goodwood Race 3: Lillie Langtry (G2), 10 a.m. ET

An intriguing edition of this 1 3/4-mile fixture for fillies and mares, and the early value might be on #2 Consent (9-2). Sir Mark Prescott’s filly was a gem of consistency at three and four, finishing first or second in all six outings, capped by a dominating score in the Prix de Royallieu (G1).

Consent flubbed her lines badly on her seasonal reappearance in the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier (G1). Although the field included returning rival Santorini Star, it was mostly comprised of males, and Consent was surely not seen to best effect when trailing home last of nine.

Although most of her best work has occurred over ground with some give, Consent has also done fine on faster surfaces. She’s proven capable against Santorini Star in the past and perhaps will prove the biggest threat to favorite and defending titlist Waardah.

Saratoga Race 1: Maiden, 12:30 p.m. ET

Second-time starter #1 Pavlova’s Palace (6-1) could not have started her career more roughly. On July 3, in a 5 1/2-furlong dash, Pavlova’s Palace “hit the inside of the gate…was urged early then had the rider fall back in the saddle briefly,” according to the chart. By then she had already conceded more than five lengths and failed to make serious headway thereafter.

This longer 1 1/16-mile trip, along with natural improvement second-time out, might result in better luck. From a family of precocious runners (she’s a half to a Group 3 juvenile winner), Pavlova’s Palace is eligible to show more for the potent combo of Mott/Alvarado.

Saratoga Race 4: Maiden, 2:12 p.m. ET

A debut runner with an interesting family tree is #6 Cybersteel (4-1), who goes for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. 

Cybersteel is a Cyberknife three-quarter sister to Life Talk, who three years ago just missed on debut here before winning for fun second out. She subsequently earned minor checks in the Frizette (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) before capping her freshman campaign with a win in the Demoiselle (G1).

Cyberknife is off to a good start as a sire, with three debut winners already this summer. More is surely to come. 

Saratoga Race 12: Maiden, 6:51 p.m. ET

Although this 1 1/16-mile grass test has attracted several previous starters with strong claims, the late-blooming #8 Lose the Blues (15-1) might fare better than expected. 

Lose the Blues is by prominent sire Not This Time, and is out of Dream Awhile, who won on debut over a distance of ground in France and later became a Grade 3 winner in America. Dream Awhile has reared two winners from as many starters, including Now Voyageur, who popped at first asking by a big margin back in December 2024.

Lose the Blues has some work to do to overcome her relative lack of experience, but I’ll be using her in my vertical and multi-race wagering plans, at the very least.
