Sunday Stakes for 12/15/2013
G3 Valedictory Stakes
Woodbine race 4
3&up going 1-3/4 mi. (A)
2:26 pm ET / 11:26 am PT
QUAESITOR may not have the resume that the others he will face on Sunday at Woodbine in the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes, but the four-year-old gelding comes into the race in top form, having won back-to-back races over the track. One key handicapping aspect in these marathon races is trying to figure out the pace. EAGLE POISE was closer than he had been in the three races since he came off a year layoff in August, but that was at a slow pace. In 2011 the seven-year-old won the Valedictory from eight lengths back early and is five-for-eight over Woodbine Polytrack. If Eagle Poise does not take initiative, TURKISH or AWESOME OVERTURE will be right there to take advantage. Turkish is winless in five starts at Woodbine and was just beaten a head after setting the early pace by Quaesitor in an allowance race last month. Awesome Overture comes out of a sixth place finish in a Grade 2 stakes over the track and two of the three wins for the Awesome Again colt have come in wire-to-wire fashion. TRICKY HAT is the 5-2 second choice on the morning line, but has yet to run in a graded stakes. - Matt Carter
