Tampa Bay stakes spot plays for March 28

A total of six black-type races for Sunshine State-bred runners will highlight a big day of racing at Tampa Bay Downs on Sunday.

Race 5 -- Sophomore Turf S.

#2 Chess’s Dream (9-5) is a standout in the seven-horse field, and I will focus on the exacta in this spot while assuming the favorite will make relative short work of the group. Grade 3 winner is a classy colt.

#3 Light Us Up (8-1) has run his best two races on the lawn, and the Upstart colt fits well with this group. Ron Potts trainee comes in fresh on the barn change and has fired five bullet drills in succession in preparation for his 2021 debut.

Race 7 -- Sophomore S.

The seven-furlong endeavor boasts a few talented three-year-olds in a solid field. #1 Gatsby (7-2) ran a big one with the removal of blinkers last time out and gets the upset nod in this spot. Alvarado trainee has the tactical speed to stay in range early, and I expect him to get a really good trip while saving ground throughout.

Race 10 -- Distaff Turf S.

Fillies and mares will travel 1 1/16 miles on the green, and I am tabbing an exacta play in the affair. #6 Beautiful Lover (2-1) brought a hefty $650,000 at Keeneland January and will start to recoup some of that investment on Sunday. Now with Christophe Clement, the five-year-old mare was a fine second in her lone local appearance in the 2020 Hillsborough S. (G2), and she seems poised for a big season.

Former claimer #10 Sun Summers (6-1) has had excuses for her last pair and offers exotics value for Maker. Broken Vow five-year-old will have clear sailing in this spot from the outside post under smart turf pilot Centeno.

Race 11 -- Sophomore Fillies S.

A very good field of 12 three-year-old fillies will run seven-eighths in a strong event. If the pace is as swift and contested as I expect it to be, then Gulfstream allowance vixen #3 Psychic Ability (12-1) should have a chance in the stretch at a price. Adios Charlie filly was very impressive in her seasonal debut last time out, and she drilled a bullet five-eighths in the interim. Joe Bravo riding adds to the appeal.
