Texas Chrome shines in Super Derby

The J.R. Caldwell trainee proceeded to parlay that into a half-length victory in the main event with jockey C.J. McMahon unable to hide his excitement as the pair crossed under the wire first in a final time of 1:49.87.
Texas Chrome may have earned his first graded score in this spot, but the bay son of Grasshopper is no stranger to the stakes winner’s circle. The Texas-bred sophomore owns five other stakes wins in addition to the Super Derby and has placed in four others, including the Matt Winn Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs and the Iowa Derby (G3) at Prairie Meadows.
Texas Chrome has suffered just one unplaced finish in his career, with that coming as a fifth in the Clevor Trevor Stakes to close out his juvenile campaign last November. His scorecard now reads 12-7-1-3 and he’s earned $602,462 in career earnings.
The bay colt was sent off the 2-1 third choice in the Super Derby, with 9-5 second favorite Dalmore finishing second behind him. It was well behind to 8-5 favorite Mo Tom in fifth, 10 3/4 lengths to be exact.
Mo Tom was looking for the Super Derby to be his second straight stakes win following a three-length triumph in the Ohio Derby on June 25. Alas, the Uncle Mo colt was “never a factor,” as described by the chart notes.
Dalmore ran well in defeat, never letting up the pressure on Texas Chrome while holding Whateverybodywants to third by three parts of a length. The Colonel John colt captured the Affirmed Stakes (G3) in early July and entered the Super Derby off a fifth-place run behind California Chrome, Beholder, Dortmund and Hoppertunity in the Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar.
