Del Mar Debutante Contenders

#1 PANDA LISTEN: First of two imports for trainer Brendan Walsh romped over Ohio-bred foes a second time out and treks to California for her first appearance with open foes. The $200,000 Tiz the Law filly has shown good early speed in both runs to date and will be sent from the fence with Kimura inheriting the mount.

#2 DEAR DIARY: Dangerous win contender was full of run late in her runner-up debut on the oval for Mandella and will appreciate the extra distance in this affair. The Spendthrift homebred is well drawn to save ground throughout the tilt, and it’s worth noting that Mike Smith chooses the daughter of Into Mischief over her stablemate.

#3 AVALON ROSE: Bob Hess pupil showed nice improvement in graduating a second time out with some class relief but faces a tall task on Saturday. The Rock Your World filly displayed a nice turn of foot last time and will likely be coming from well off the tempo on Saturday beneath Julien Leparoux.

#4 CRAZY HOT MESS: Sorrento (G3) third from the Miller shedrow is obviously a talented runner and will get a better pace setup on this occasion. The chestnut daughter of Pinehurst has posted two nice morning moves in preparation for the tilt and will have Joel Rosario in the controls.

#5 FREE CLOSER: Michael McCarthy trainee romped in a state-bred stakes race on the course at short odds most recently and will be a player if she brings that effort to this dash. The Pavel filly picks up Rispoli and will be rallying from off the pace once again.

#6 FOR THE WIN: George Weaver filly ships in from Ellis Park coming off a runner-up performance in the Debutante S. in her latest venture. The juvenile miss was well clear of third in her stakes bow and could challenge for a Grade 1 placing with further improvement in her first run in the Golden State.

#7 WELL VERSED: Second from the Mandella shedrow was a sharp second to the top pick in her first offering and has to be given a chance with one under her belt. Out of a Grade-1 heroine, the Into Mischief filly has trained well all summer at this venue and wouldn’t be a major surprise with Tyler Baze inheriting the mount.

#8 HOLMBY: Sorrento queen is one of two in the cast for Bob Baffert and is two-for-two on the course to begin her career. The daughter of freshman sire Corniche was game in the lane at six panels last time, and the move to seven-eighths should pose no problem for the talented lass with Ricky Gonzalez taking the reins for the first time.

#9 MISS MONICA: Top pick was very impressive in a debut romp on the surface for Baffert when she registered a 102 Brisnet Speed rating as well as a 103 Late Pace rating. The $850,000 purchase by the sharp young sire Early Voting drilled a swift six furlongs on the strip in advance of her stakes debut and will be an imposing foe with anything resembling her last showing. Juan Hernandez opts to stay in the silks.

#10 FAST AMY: Walsh charge is the second from this barn and moved forward second time out when posting a strong win on the Ellis Park dirt most recently. The Jackie’s Warrior filly has been well backed as the favorite in both runs to date, but the $165,000 yearling purchase will offer much more value in this spot with Hector Berrios accepting the mount.
