Top Three-Year-Olds in Tonight's Golden State Derby Trials

Los Alamitos will run trials Sunday evening for the $200,000 Golden State Derby (G2). Some proven 2-year-old champions are entered in the 400-yard qualifying races, which will run as the eighth and ninth races of the card. First post tonight is  6:30 pm (PT).

AQHA champion trainer Paul Jones will saddle four runners; with three entered in the first trial. Senor Gianni, Much Better Reason and Peacefull Delight will run in race eight with Free Swinger under Cesar DeAlba entered in the ninth.  Jones, who is currently the second-ranked AQHA trainer in wins for 2016, won the Golden State Derby in 2010 with Good Reason SA.

Champion filly Walk Thru Crystal runs Sunday night at Los Alamitos



Walk Thru Crystal, 2015 AQHA Champion 2-year-old filly, will run in the final trial for trainer Yanet Rodriguez. The well-bred filly captured both the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and the Kindergarten Futurity last year.  Jesus Ayala has the mount, and will break from post position seven. Another notable contender in that heat is Rite Regal, a gelded son of Favorite Cartel,  who will be ridden by Cruz Mendez.  Rite Regal has won his last two starts, including the $210,000 El Primero del Ano Derby (G3) on April 3.

The horses ten fastest qualifiers will return for the final on Sunday, August 21. Past champions of this prestigious race include One Famous Eagle, Good Reason Sa, Far Niente, the late Moonist, who won in 2014 and AQHA world champion, Heza Dasha Fire, the 2015 Golden State Derby winner.
