Track update: Belmont Park trends for May 4

Though many of us will still be catching our breath after an eventful Kentucky Derby (G1) weekend, there is a big week ahead at Belmont Park, with a Saturday card that features five graded stakes, including the Man o' War (G1) and the Peter Pan (G3).

Jockeys

Two weeks into the Belmont meet, familiar faces top the jockey standings. Irad Ortiz Jr. and Mannny Franco lead with 13 wins, though Ortiz has done so in 35 starts (37% wins) and Franco has started 64 times (20% wins). Ortiz has also finished in the money at a stellar 69% rate.

Jose Ortiz is the only other jockey with double-digit wins. He has 10 victories in 44 starts (23%), with another 18 in-the-money finishes.

Looking specifically at turf, these are still the riders to watch. The Ortiz brothers both have seven wins on grass, and Franco has five.

Trainers

On the trainers' side, Chad Brown is the runaway leading trainer, with 11 wins — seven clear of a second-place tie between Christophe Clement, Bill Mott, Rob Atras, and Robert Falcone.

The vast majority of Brown's form has come on grass. He has one win from 11 starts on turf, but 10 wins from 29 tries on turf.

On the main track, no barn has romped like Brown is on the turf. Brad Cox's dirt starters have both been winners, and Bill Mott (three wins, seven starts), Orlando Noda (three wins, nine starts), Chris Englehart (two wins, four starts), and James Chapman (two wins, five starts) had sharp starts on dirt.

Track trends

Pay special attention to post positions on dirt. The inside has been exquisite. Ten of 23 sprints have been won from post 1 and four more from post 2. Four of 13 races at a mile or longer have been won from the fence, as well.
