Trying to beat the favorite in the All American Stakes at Golden Gate Fields

The $100,000 All American Stakes (G3) at Golden Gate Fields on Memorial Day Monday drew a field of nine runners, and multiple Grade 2 winner Alert Bay (#6) has been installed as the 2-1 favorite.

There’s no denying the Blaine Wright trainee’s talent, especially over the track (6-2-4-0), but his odds are likely to drop even further as post time approaches.

With that in mind, Point Piper (#5) may be poised to prevail in his first outing at Golden Gate for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The seven-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway has faced some major competition in his time on track, including California Chrome, and still managed to grab a piece of the top three. He’s thrown triple-digit BRIS Speed ratings in the past, including a career best 103 for taking the Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) at Emerald Downs last August by 4 3/4 lengths. At 6-1 on the morning line, Point Piper is worth taking a shot with.

Dalmore (#2) is looking to rebound in this spot off a pair of subar efforts earlier this season. The Keith Desormeaux trainee was beaten double-digit lengths in the San Antonio Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park and Essex Handicap at Oaklawn Park, but before that opened his four-year-old campaign with a third-place run in the San Pasqual Stakes (G2) on New Year’s Day at that former track. Winner of the Affirmed Stakes (G3) last year, which saw the Colonel John colt earn a career-best 103 BRIS Speed figure, Dalmore has the back class to get the job done here at 6-1 on the morning line.

G. G. Ryder (#7) will break to Alert Bay’s outside on Monday, and might also provide a nice little upset in the one-mile affair. The six-year-old chestnut finished behind Alert Bay in their prior two meetings and could be ready to turn the tables on his rival. G. G. Ryder has been going well of late, racking up a 1-4-1 mark from his seven starts since finishing 11th in this contest last year. The Hollendorfer charge came up empty that day but also ran fifth in the San Francisco Mile (G3) before it. This time around the son of Chhaya Dance finished second to Alert Bay in the 2017 San Francisco Mile, and might have been saving his best for this spot at 5-1 on the morning line.

While all three of the above offer good morning-line odds, a real longshot play in the All American might be Street Lad (#1). The Street Cry gelding is 7-3-0-1 in his career, all of which has taken place at Golden Gate Fields. The Hollendorfer four-year-old is riding a two-race win streak, and appears to like leading the way on the front end. He could grab the advantage out of the gate and never look back in his stakes bow, for which he was assigned 15-1 morning-line odds.
