Tuesday harness preview

November 11th, 2014

Those standardbred fans too eager to wait until this weekend for the Breeders Crown elims will want to get to the track early on Tuesday evening as Rosecroft Raceway in Maryland offers a 12-race card that offers plenty of plays early and late.

In the opening race on the card, a $5000 claiming affair for pacers, Cowboy Artist (Corey Braden) will look to continue his winning ways when he starts from post nine in the second tier. The six-year-old Blissfull Hall gelding has won three straight races for trainer Eric Ell and colorful owner William Still, who can typically be seen displaying the famed "discount double check" celebration in the winner's circle every time he guides an Ell trainee into the spotlight for the photo.

One race later on the card, the $10,000 Open 2 handicap for trotters should be a contentious event. Chinese Cuisine (John Duer) made an immediate impression last week when he romped home eight lengths clear in 1:55.2 in his local debut. Master Builder (Tyler Raymer) rallied from far back to finish third in his first start in three months and figures to improve, while House On Fire (Jonathan Roberts) will seek his fourth win in five local starts for trainer Judy Welty despite being assigned post eight on the far outside.

One race later in the third, a non-winners of $3000 last five starts class for pacers, give Beginner's Luck (Frank Milby) a chance for the upset while leaving from post two. A four-year-old Camluck gelding trained by Ron Dixon, Jr. of Matter of Opinion fame, Beginner's Luck won here on Sep. 30 and returns after being thumped by much tougher at Dover Downs last week.

Just past the midway point of the card, give Hi Sir (Russell Foster) a chance for a 10-1 upset in the $10,000 Open 2 for pacers. An easy winner at this level in early October, Hi Sir has been second, third and fifth in this class in three tries since. Caviart Tyler (Roberts) merits respect despite missing a week, while Lyons Meandragon (Roger Plante, Jr.) will seek his third win in this class after a 48-1 shocker over Shady Breeze last week and Movie Idol (Milby) drops back into this level after missing last week.

Then in the ninth, a non-winners of $4000 last five starts condition for pacers, look for the two inside horses to control the tempo from the outset. Upbyfive (Jared Moyer) won at this level last week as the 6-5 favorite and already owns two other victories at the meet, while Main A Dieu Too (Plante) returns to conditioned company after five straight tries in the various Open ranks where he managed to earn a check four times while sporting one second-place finish.

Then two races later in the other half of the split, non-winners of $4000 last five starts class, look for railbound sophomore Above The Storm (Donnie Russell) to have a slight fitness edge over his main rivals here to score for trainer Duane Wagner and former driver, Lloyd Gilmour, younger brother of the late, great Buddy Gilmour. Above The Storm won two starts back against lesser, but should be able to make the slight jump while likely choice Winchester's Punch (Mike Beaver) starts from post seven after missing a week and Anotherbugga (Braden) leaves from post eight following a sharp score against lesser.
