Tuesday Harness Preview for 5/20/2014
by Ted Black
Congrats to those players who hit Faster Faster at Yonkers on Monday night: huge effort to run second at 70-1!
While most tracks save their best cards for the weekends, Rosecroft offers its best night of racing on Tuesday when both its top pacing mares and pacing boys are highlighted. Tuesday's card really heats up from the sixth race on.
In fact, the sixth offers a solid group of $8/10,000 claiming pacers, several of which are in good form. Al Ibad Spider has won his last two, albeit against $5000 claimers and Osceola Gold looks to regain his winning ways after seeing his six-race win streak snapped following a sick scratch and jump in class. Harrington invader Olive To Party will be tough to beat from post two, as will Gone Nuclear who drew the rail.
One race later in the $8500 Open 2, look for Main A Dieu Too to regain his winning ways and eclipse the $250,000 plateau in career earnings when he drops out of the Open 1 for this event and gets post three. Woodstock Hanover, who drew just to his inside, also drops out of the top Open and figures to be very tough in here having won against $25,000 claimers at Harrah's Philadelphia last month for trainer Eric Ell.
Then one race later in the $12,000 Open 1 Handicap where post positions were assigned by highest earnings over their last five starts, expect last week's winner Winbak Carl to repeat and notch his fourth win in five starts at the meet. When he sat out two weeks ago, Beavercreek Artist won the top class and this race will mark their first encounter of the season. Caviart Tyler steps up off a win in the Open 2 last week and cannot be overlooked.
Then one race later in the Filly-Mare Open, Megs Breeze is the leading candidate for the track's overnight horse of the meet having won five of eight starts while second in the other three for the father-son, trainer-driver tandem of William "Bib" Roberts and Jonathan Roberts. Rocket Rosy has won her last two starts in the top class, but draws outside 'Meg' this evening. Together Again N has finished third in each of her last three outings after winning this class in last April.
The Tuesday card at Harrington will highlight the top filly and mare pacers, from lower conditions to the top class and some of them are competitive, playable events.
In the opening race on the card, look for Pearl Handlepistol to rebound from a third-place effort as the 4-5 choice a week ago and get the better of Allisa Page this evening. Last week both displayed speed and raced well in the split, non-winners of $4501 last five class and both will be near the front early again this evening. But Pearl Handlepistol gets the nod here and she will likely be twice the price of Allisa Page.
One race later in the other half of the split conditioned for pacing distaffers, expect the big drop in class for Ash Larue to enable this nine-year-old Artiscape mare to reach the wire first. Ash Larue is accustomed to facing much tougher on the Delaware circuit, including occasional spots in the F-M Open at Dover and Harrington, and this class should be ideal for her. Sucha Bad Girl will likely complete the exacta.
Then in the third, a non-winners of $2501 last five class for pacing fillies and mares, give Preview The Dream a good chance to score. Owned, trained and driven by David Hill, III, Preview The Dream does not possess an abundance of gate speed, but she can race first over and grind her way past foes in the lane. This looks like the spot for her to notch her first win in 11 tries this season.
Then several races later in the sixth, a non-winners of $10,001 last five/optional $25,000 claiming race for the distaff pacers, look for either Lorrie Please or Alexachase to reach the wire first and end Angelwithanattitude's three-race win streak. Lorrie Please has spent the winter and spring facing much tougher at The Meadowlands and Harrah's Philadelphia and should enjoy the return visit to her home state.
At Yonkers Raceway on Tuesday, the 11-race card perhaps cannot be entirely passed over. In the 10th, a non-winners of four races lifetime class for pacers, look for Boogiewoogiebrian to improve considerably on his fourth-place effort of one week ago. Last week in this group he started from post eight and raced third over into a good back half and rallied late to get fourth. Starting from post three this evening he should be able to work out a much better trip and reach the wire first.
