Tuttipaesi scores in Santa Ana

The Irish-bred mare bided her time in the rear of the field early as 4-5 favorite Her Emmynency set fractions of :24.50, :48.51 and 1:12.14 up front. Tuttipaesi found herself trapped upon hitting upper stretch and but jockey Chris DeCarlo didn’t panic.
He kept Tuttipaesi off the heels of those running in front of her, then sent her between rivals to get up late in a final time of 1:48.82 for nine furlongs on the firm turf.
Tuttipaesi paid $7.40 as the 5-2 second choice in the five-distaffer field. Glory tracked in second on the backstretch, gained command in the stretch, but couldn’t withstand Tuttipaesi and finished second three parts of a length up on Fresh Feline. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to Nashoba’s Gold, while Her Emmynency faded to last, another 1 1/2 lengths behind.
Tuttipaesi is now 17-7-2-3, $493,289, in her career. She previously captured a trio of stakes stateside, including the Suffolk Downs Distaff Turf and South Beach to close out her 2015 campaign.
The daughter of Clodovil opened her six-year-old season with a third last out in the Marshua’s River (G3), adding that to placings in Ashland (G1), Herecomesthebride (G3) and De La Rose. She also shows a pair of listed wins from beginning her career in Italy.
Tuttipaesi is out of the unraced Acatenango mare Ruby Ridge and counts as her fourth dam champion It’s in the Air.
This black-type rich female family also includes multiple Grade/Group 1-winning millionaire and sire Storming Home, multiple Grade 1-scoring millionaire Music Note, and Grade/Group 1 heroine and French classic winner Musical Chimes.

Chris DeCarlo, jockey Tuttipaesi, winner: “The last time I rode in California was in 2002 at Hollywood, for the American Oaks; this is my first ride ever at Santa Anita.
“Every time she’s run for me, she’s run really well. The last time she ran, she was a little aggravated, a little high strung and the heat was getting to her. She really enjoyed today.
“She’s tactical. Going down the backside Alex (Solis on Fresh Feline) kind of came out and I didn’t want to lose my cover and have to be three-wide all the way around. I was able to tuck in behind Mike (Smith on runner-up Glory) the whole way; his horse was running well.
“At the top of the lane it was tight. I didn’t have anywhere to go but there was a little separation at the eighth-pole and once she got her head in there, she was able to muscle her way through. She’s a tough filly, she’s a fighter. She’s the kind you want, she won’t back away from a challenge.”
Riley Mott, son of trainer Bill Mott Tuttipaesi, winner: “I didn’t have to tell Chris (DeCarlo) anything. He knows the mare very, very well. He’s been on her a few times, it was a short filed, a little bit of speed, but when they open the gates, it’s all up to him.
“He did a good job. She was in tight turning for home but was pretty valiant. I wasn’t sure (she would get there) until 100 yards from the line, when she got out. I know she’s game. She showed it in her previous races. This was a pretty special win.”
Tuttipaesi was also entered to run at Fair Grounds on Saturday but her connections chose Santa Anita instead.
“It seems like we made the right decision. It was a big testament to our team, and the owner. We’ve put in a lot of work with her so this was a very gratifying victory.”
Mike Smith, jockey Glory, second: “I had to move a bit earlier than I wanted to. Going in to the far turn Fresh Feline came up on our outside and when that happened, I had to go with them and it turned into too long of a run. In saying that she ran too good to lose.”
