Two Remain Perfect in Round 2
The second round of the $20,000 bestbet Derby ran on Friday evening January 20th, and two greyhounds posted up yet another win to keep their sheets clean heading into the quarter-finals. Two other greyhounds rebounded after disappointing efforts in round 1 and another was just a good old fashion surprise at the wire.
Leading the way was Easi Ted. Firing out fast and taking instant command of the 13th race. Ted stole away almost 4 lengths early on and never let his foot off the gas pedal. Breezing around the oval, no on gained a step on him as he crossed the wire all alone in the best time on the card, 37.11 seconds. A distant second was the steady chasing Pat C Outbounds, followed by the closing Ww’s Associate in third, and the early threat So typical in fourth.
Omega Point ran a similar race to remain undefeated in the 7th, but he had to work a bit harder to get his W at the wire. Point bolted out from the starting box, but he was under pressure from the get go. Tempo rock also came to run and was just off the leader as they turned up the frontstretch. Never going away, but never really challenging to take the lead, Rock chased Point all the way to the finish line. Rock did manage to slim the lengths at the wire, but not enough to secure a victory. Point by one lengths at the finish in 37.69 seconds. Tempo Rock finished 2rd, the fast closing Mr Tito was third and the even paced chase Bf Par Kingsman was 4th.
Another good story was that pre-race favorite, Lk’s Centuria found her break. Beating the box in the 15th race on the card, she was on a mission to rebound from a disappointing 4th place effort in round 1. She drove around the oval and with every step she took. She drew further and further away from the competition. Stretching her 1 length lead early on, to almost five at the wire, her 37.27 second clocking was the second best on the right. Gaining ground early, and holding strong late, was Pat C Funkie in place. Barts Risingstar chased the leaders throughout and closed a bit for show as Hustle It Upgirl found her best stride late and stole away the last spot in the superfecta at the wire.
The 770-track record holder Herstal was the other greyhound that got off the snide in this effort. Posted well inside, she made the most of the starting box and was close at the break, before being outrushed around the turn. She didn’t give up, and even though she spotted the leaders a healthy margin early, her determination payed off in the end. Coming from fourth at the far turn, she ran down the stretch leader, Pat C Merlin, who gave a winning effort but was denied, and Blutoocapncrunch to secure a victory by a neck at the finish line. Completing the superfecta was Trackinfo Rich who closed from last and was just 2 lengths off of the win at the wire.
The other winner was Aintgunnawasteit in the 9th on the card. With this victory, the Blanchard kennel got two on the card, Easi Ted also runs for Blanchard, and that gets them the title of hottest in the second round. Unlike his early speed kennelmate, Aintgunnawasteit had to come from off the pace to pull off the upset at 5-1. Closing from last, Aintgunnawasteit gained with every stride he took around the track and dwindled the easy lead of Miss Margie in the process. From 4 lengths, ahead of the rest at the far turn, he caught her going home and ran by for the 2-length victory at the wire. Settling for place was the early lead, followed by the late rallying Ramblin Mitch in third and the early threat Ima Little Crazy in 4th.
The field will be trimmed down for the quarter-finals as the top 4 fields of greyhounds battle it out on Monday evening January 23rd to see just who moves on the semis. Come out and join us!
