Dick Powell handicaps the Monday card at Presque Isle Downs.
Race One:
1st: (7) ANCHISES – dropped down some in class towards the end of last season when Linda Rice claimed him for $30,000. Now, he shows up 225 days later against much cheaper. Rice wins 40% first start dropping down off the claim. ,
2nd: (5) FAST LEARNER – has yet to win here but has three seconds and three thirds in six starts. He finished up last season against bottom maiden claimers, and Mike Rogers is waiving the claim against these.
3rd: (3) ROWDY WARRIOR – his best race was second time out on the dirt at Penn National.
Race Two:
1st: (2) WROTE IN STONE – returns off a 214-day layoff and has his claim waived. He ran well last season going two turns, but does show a win here at today’s distance. Gelding came out running last year off a similar layoff.
2nd: (9) THE SINNER IS YOU – horse for the course has won 12 times here. Son of Into Mischief just missed in his final start in very fast time, and he’ll be tough if he can come close to that.
3rd: (5) ICING – drops down in class, second start off the claim for last year’s leading trainer, Tim Girten.
Race Three:
1st: (3) SOUPER UPGRADE – last year, Mike Trombetta was 10 for 29 (34%) here and shows up here with a filly by Win Win Win that ran well in a turf sprint at Laurel last out. Leading rider Antonio Gallardo (118 for 374 – 32%) gets the mount.
2nd: (7) WAITINGFORTHELIGHT – showed better gate speed going short on the Tapeta at Turfway Park but did little when stretched out to two turns. Girten turns him back to a sprint and picks up Pablo Morales (21% here last season).
3rd: (8) WALL STREET MAGIC– speedball moves way up in class, so this looks like a prep for a future dropdown.
Race Four:
1st: (1) RIGHT NOW – was a sharp winner two starts back over a tiring track at Turfway. He rallied from far back to win again there last out despite being shuffled back from post one. Antonio Gallardo, who won on him here last year, is back aboard.
2nd: (4) SARATOGA GAZE – speedy mare tries Tapeta for the first time, but she shows high speed going two turns on turf. She pressed a fast pace on the turf at Tampa Bay in the last start before tiring.
3rd: (7) ALCOHOL – was a sharp winner two starts back from post 12 going two turns on the turf at Tampa.
Race Five:
1st: (4) RED WREN – ran well sprinting here last year but did little in two turf routes at Tampa. She drops way down in class and distance for Kevin Rice, who wins 31% with this class move and 18% with his overall claimers.
2nd: (10) MOMENTOUS MISS – finished up last season with three starts here going six furlongs, and they were all competitive. Daughter of Kantharos starts off her season dropping way down in class.
3rd: (9) LAST GLIMMER – finished up last season with two even efforts against his claiming level.
Race Six:
1st: (4) WHERE YOU WAS – horse for the course ran well here last season at the age of nine. He came out running off a similar layoff for Randy Russell, who wins 19% the first start after a win.
2nd: (3) TOP RECRUIT – was a sharp winner two starts back on the dirt going this distance in fast time two starts back, then tired late. Juan Arriagada wins 18% first start off the claim and 25% second start off the layoff.
3rd: (11) OCEAN OF STORMS – beat cheaper two starts back on the dirt, then raced evenly.
Race Seven:
1st: (2) STARGAZZERS DREAM – beat high-level claimers two starts back at Turfway Park when Lasix was added for the first time, then he was an even third against starter allowance foes. Gallardo picks up the ride for Kelsey Danner.
2nd: (9) OSPREY – makes his PID debut off two decent dirt sprints going seven furlongs at Tampa Bay. Versatile seven-year-old has won on dirt, wet dirt, turf, and synthetic with four at today’s distance.
3rd: (3) TARSUS WARRIOR – horse for the course won twice here last year.
Race Eight:
1st: (11) SCHNITTKER – returns off a 320-day layoff for Wesley Ward, who wins 22% in this spot and 30% first time against claimers. Son of Practical Joke has trained well at Keeneland and gets Walter Rodriguez.
2nd: (10) MAC’S CAT – moves up in class while dropping down in distance for Randy Russell, who wins 17% with his overall claimers and 13% off the long layoff.
3rd: (1) BOHEMIAN STYLE – broke his maiden at 2-5 odds going two turns for the first time, then was an even third in a long sprint.
