Spot Plays for 2026 Florida Derby Day at Gulfstream Park

The Gulfstream Park Championship meeting reaches its climax on Saturday with a behemoth 14-race program, highlighted by the Florida Derby (G1). Not only did that race produce last year's Kentucky Derby (G1) winner, but Saturday's edition has the feel of being the key prep for this year's first classic, too.
Although I won't be heavily investing in the Florida Derby itself, a few entries on the undercard have caught my eye.
Race 1: Allowance, 11:30 a.m. ET
Even though they occurred way back in the fall of 2024, the two turf efforts turned in by #4 Ashley's Archer (9-2) stick out. He impressively won at first asking over the surface in his second start, and then showed a different tactical dimension coming from off the pace to cross the wire first in the restricted Cup and Saucer S. before his demotion due to causing interference.
Attempts to turn him into dirt or a synthetic horse last season ranged from modestly good to very poor. Mostly, he was outclassed, especially in the first two Canadian classics. The return to grass here should perk him up, as should the return to allowance company. Also, assume the recent fast workouts over the Palm Meadows grass are a positive indicator for the potent Casse/Castellano combo.
Race 10: Sanibel Island S., 4:06 p.m. ET
She concedes experience versus winners and in stakes company, but #3 Vekoma View (6-1) is potentially dangerous off a second-out maiden win. Although allowed to set a moderate pace, she had rivals breathing down her much of the way before she separated herself from the pack in upper stretch.
This female family has produced classic winner and Grade 1 turf star War of Will, as well as Irish Group 1 victor Pathfork. Also, Vekoma View's half-sister Cliffs was beaten only a half-length in her stakes debut last December in the American Oaks (G1). I'm taking an optimistic view that Vekoma View is potentially cut from the same cloth.
Race 13: Pan American (G3), 5:58 p.m. ET
Far Bridge is the class of the field and undefeated over this course. #1 Corruption (7-2), though, has a pretty good record here (5-3-1-0), came within a neck of beating Far Bridge in this race a year ago in his stakes debut, and will be a much better price.
Corruption finished no better than third in three subsequent stakes attempts after the Pan Am last season, but it's not clear he liked the less-than-firm ground in a couple of them and was cooked chasing a hot pace in the River City (G3) when last seen. He looks like the one to run down here, and perhaps they won't.
They were all chasing Corruption in R8 at @churchilldowns! 🍀@jose93_ortiz was up for trainer @markecasse.
