Wednesday Harness Preview for 4/2/2014
While both tracks will offer their best cards on Thursday and Saturday evenings, respectively, both Dover Downs and Pompano Park will present programs that are geared toward highlighting the trotters this evening and upsets could actually be the rule.
Dover Downs will offer the second round of Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund eliminations for three-year-old colt & gelding trotters this evening and the third division could present the best wagering opportunity. In the fourth race, look for Lg's Pride to notch his first victory of the campaign and possibly earn a berth in next Wednesday's $100,000 DSBF final. Last week in the first round of elims, Lg's Pride got away fourth, brushed to command down the backside in a quick third quarter and gave way grudgingly late while third.
Despite drawing post six this evening, Lg's Pride should be able to work out a better trip and find the winner's circle. Several races later in the eighth, a non-winners of the $12,500 last six class for trotters, give Looking Hanover yet another chance to attain his first victory of the campaign. Winless in eight starts on the season and having burned plenty of tickets along the way, Looking Hanover displayed plenty of late trot last week while settling for third in a similar class. The durable, eight-year-old millionaire son of Muscles Yankee drew the rail and should be in prime position throughout the mile tonight.
Then in the 10th, the winners over $12,000 last six class for older trotters, look for Spunk Jack to make immediate amends for his third-place finish a week ago. In this same class last Wednesday, Spunky Jack set honest fractions to the half and three-quarters and was eventually overtake late by Enrico As, who will be favored in this group this evening. But Spunky Jack should be able to dictate his terms to the half and that will enable him to outlast the closers in the lane.
At Pompano Park this evening a pair of trotters look poised for minor upsets. In the third, the featured $10,000 Open Handicap, give Count Speed a chance to post a 6-1 upset in a race where Jolenes Pinehonker was assigned the outside slot. Count Speed won against lesser last week in the non-winners of $4751 last five class while many of the others in here, including Jolenes Pinehonker, were idle. That extra week of fitness could enable Count Speed to capture the Open tonight.
Then several races later in the eighth, a non-winners of $4751 last five class for trotters, take a shot on She's All In. Granted, the Rick Plano-trained and driver trotter was second against lesser last week in the non-winners of $3251 last five class here, but she raced well while beaten just a neck in 1:56.2. She's All In draws the rail for this class and is listed at 8-1 on the morning line and that combination warrants at least a token wager.
