Weekend cards mark season finales
With the Christmas and New Year's holidays fast approaching, several harness tracks along the East Coast will offer their final live cards of the calendar this Saturday and three of them offer good wagering opportunties.
One week after its Saturday card was cancelled by a weekend snowstorm, Yonkers Raceway will present its final live card of 2013 on what is expected to be an unseasonably warm evening.
In the 9th race on the card, look for Dancin Yankee to garner his first victory since returning from a layoff and a pair of qualifiers. The five-year-old Yankee Crusier gelding gets a modest class drop to non-winners of $18,000 last six company and moves inside four spots and should be able to control the pace before the half. He was victimized by a poor post, slow pace and excess dull cover in his outing on Dec. 7 against non-winners of $25,000 last six company.
Then in the finale of the card and the entire season at Yonkers, expect It's A Good Thing to rebound from a narrow setback as the 9-5 favorite in the faster of two, non-winners of $25,000 last six condition on Dec. 7. The seven-year-old Western Maverick gelding trained by Heidi Rohr stays in the same class and should be a factor throughout.
That same evening at Pompano Park in sunny, southern Florida, give Cartoonist a chance to upend older rivals in the third race, a non-winners of $3251 last five class. The sophomore son of Modern Art has been second twice, third twice and fourth twice in six recent outings over the Florida oval but should emerge victorious at a decent price this weekend.
Several races later on the same card, look for Prairie Jaguar to extend his good recent form spree since arriving from Canada. The five-year-old Spy Hard gelding has won two straight starts over the oval and should be able to handle the climb into the Open II class. His two outings over the PPK strip have been very good and he could earn a spot in the Open I very soon.
Then on Saturday evening at Rosecroft Raceway, the Maryland five-eighths mile oval will present its last card of the season.
In the opening race on the card for trotters that are non-winners of three races lifetime, look for Nidaros to rebound from a third-place finish behind Order By Me. The three-year-old filly trained by Jeff Clark had won her previous start for the conditioner and should prevail against this group with Order By Me finally graduating out.
Much later on the card expect another Clark trainee to find the winner's circle when Frightening Cold goes postward in the non-winners of three event for pacing fillies and mares. Last week she found room late and displayed plenty of kick to notch her second straight tally over the oval and should garner her third straight this evening.
Then in the finale on the card, look for Mackenzie Mc (Tony Morgan) to emerge victorious, especially if Morgan makes the trip. His main threat, Evergreen Trigger, drew inside of him and will loom as the favorite.
Also on the card, Rosecroft will honor a pair of horses that enjoyed successful fall campaigns. Shaker Rei, the talented mare trained and driven by John Gazzerro, was the track's selection as the top overnight horse for the fall meet, while Bigtown Hero, a one-time conqueror of the talented Abelard Hanover, was selected as the track's top overnight horse by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the U.S. Harness Writers Association.
