With Anticipation, P.G. Johnson put spotlight on turf-oriented juveniles

August 29th, 2016

Turf-oriented two-year-olds will take center stage midweek at Saratoga with Wednesday's $200,000 With Anticipation (G2) and Thursday's $100,000 P.G. Johnson for fillies potentially yielding a contender or more for the Breeders' Cup in two months time.

Todd Pletcher has trained two of the past three With Anticipation winners, and four overall in the 11-year history of the race. For Wednesday's renewal he'll send out Made You Look, who rebounded from a debut loss to Red Lodge to break his maiden at Belmont going six furlongs way back on June 18. The son of More Than Ready counts as his second dam the Hall of Fame champion Serena's Song.

Keep Quiet, who set a soft pace en route to a 5 1/4-length maiden win over the same course and trip as the With Anticipation, could see more pressure from the likes of Ardmore Bay, who has captured both starts, including the $60,000 Tyro at Monmouth Park for the hot Thomas Morley barn. Longshot Gemologister also has some early foot, but the three-race maiden looks very much outclassed.

My Bo Chop invades from the French provinces where he won one of three starts, and now makes his debut for trainer Arnaud Delacour. Stepping up from maiden wins at Delaware Park are Tell the Truth and Monsoon K S A.

While the With Anticipation is at 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf, the fillies will travel the same distance on the Mellon Turf. Won last year by eventual Grade 1 winner Harmonize, Thursday's P.G. Johnson has a solid favorite in Coasted, who romped by six lengths in her turf debut August 7. The daughter of Tizway is 7-5 on the morning line against six rivals.

The likely second choice is Majestic Bonnie, who rallied to win her debut by a head for George Weaver in the opening days of the Saratoga meet.
