Woodbine: A play for race 12 on Saturday

November 7th, 2020

There's still plenty of racing to play after the Breeders' Cup winds to a close. Let's wander north for Saturday's Woodbine nightcap. It's the Jackpot High Five race (with a $357,186 carryover), and also closes out the late double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6.

Race 12: $10,000 Maiden Claiming

Six furlongs on the dirt
Post time: 7:05 p.m. ET

The two best bet are #10 Jackie Milton (5-2) and #2 Souper Capacity (3-1). In her second career start, Souper Capacity makes some sense on top. She didn't get away great on debut and made a mild run to finish midpack. She keeps high-percentage rider Justin Stein, returns to the same course and distance, and drops in class.

Jackie Milton, on the other hand, has had 10 tries already, and four third place finishes. She is first off the Martin Drexler claim, but Justin Stein jumps ship to ride Souper Capacity. And, her last race suggested that her best chance to win would come on the lead. In this field she'll probably have to revert to her old ways of sitting off the pace and clunking up for a share underneath.

The value possibility in the race, on the win end, is #9 Top Hat Boss (6-1). She put on blinkers for the first time after dropping to this level, set the pace, and kept on for third. Even with the cutback to a flat six furlongs, she shapes as controlling speed. It also looks good that she is returning relatively quickly after a race for the first time in her otherwise stop-and-start career.

Much of the fun of these big fields is finding which outsiders can make the exotics pay. Though #12 Space General (15-1) hasn't raced in over a year, she drops to this level for the first time and is working regularly for Justin Nixon, who often hits the board with long layoff types. Also consider #5 Drumgreenaghbridge (10-1), who was a credible fourth over course and distance against tougher competition last time out.
