Woodbine track update for June 7

June 7th, 2021

After an extremely long wait, it's finally here. The 2021 Woodbine meet begins Saturday, June 12!

Let's meet the top connections and find some price angles!

Jockeys

After a couple years of coming close, Rafael Hernandez was the leading rider at Woodbine last season, with 129 wins in 636 starts (20.3%). Justin Stein made Hernandez work for it. Stein had 127 wins in 664 starts (19.1%). For bettors, Stein was more exciting, as he returned a +2% flat-bet ROI, compared to Hernandez's -16% ROI.

Stein was particularly lucrative on grass. Not only was he the leading turf rider (52 wins, 227 starts, 22.9%), but he had a +25% ROI on the lawn. Emma-Jayne Wilson also had an excellent 2020 at Woodbine, both for herself and bettors β€” 32 turf wins, fourth in the colony, with a healthy +35% ROI.

Steven Bahen was the only rider with 10 or more wins who had a positive ROI on Woodbine's Tapeta main track, at +4%. He had 21 wins from 168 starts (12.5%), with a +20% ROI in all-weather sprints. In Tapeta routes, Stein excelled. He had 22 wins in 123 starts (17.9%), with a +15% ROI.

Trainers

Mark Casse was the runaway leading trainer at Woodbine last year, with 93 wins from 480 starts (19.4%), compared to Norman McKnight's 44 from 214 starters (20.6%) and Robert Tiller's 43 in 209 starts (20.6%). From a betting perspective, Tiller had a positive flat-bet ROI last meet, at +7%.

Though Casse had the most turf wins, with 35, it was the trainers tied for second in wins who really brought it home for bettors. Kevin Attard (14-for-92, 15%) had a +10% ROI on his turf runners, and Sid Attard (14-for-62, 23%) brought a +24% turf ROI.

On Tapeta Casse led in wins, with 58, and had a close to even flat-bet ROI, just -1%. Second-place Robert Tiller (33 wins, 150 starters, 22%) offered a positive return, +9% across his all-weather horses.

Watch when Michael Trombetta ships horses for the Woodbine Tapeta. He had nine wins from 20 starts (45%) last year, for a +137% ROI. He wins and he pays.
