Four weeks after obliterating six rivals in the Mr. Prospector (G3), X Y Jet turned in a flashy encore in Saturday's $150,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint at Gulfstream Park.
Under Emissael Jaramillo, the 3-5 favorite took the lead at the start, increased his advantage setting a wicked pace of :21.71 and :43.96, and drew off in the lane to win by 4 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:08.58 for six furlongs on a fast track. X Y Jet paid $3.20.
Wildcat Red, the second choice in a field of eight Florida-breds, finished second, 3 1/2 lengths ahead of C. Zee.
"Wow. Just wow," winning trainer Jorge Navarro said. "He broke kind of slow, which made me a little nervous, but he was coming from the eight hole so he didn't have enough time to be right there. He's just a super horse. He's a fast, fast horse."
The Sunshine Millions Sprint was the second straight stakes win and fourth consecutive overall for X Y Jet, who preceded his 9 1/4-length win in the December 19 Mr. Prospector with allowance wins at Monmouth Park and Gulfstream Park West. The gray son of Kantharos is owned by Gelfenstein Stable.
The $100,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3), a 6 1/2-furlong event on February 27, could be on the agenda, but the four-year-old gelding is going so good now that a potentially lucrative overseas jaunt to Dubai for the $2 million Golden Shaheen (G1) in late March might be worthwhile.
In the day's most lucrative event, Team Valor's Mexikoma wore down long-time leader Mr. Jordan to register his first stakes win in the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Classic.
Trained by Michael Dilger and ridden by John Velazquez, Mexikoma finished 1 1/2 lengths clear of Mr. Jordan, with Catholic Cowboy 12 lengths behind in third. The 13-10 favorite, Mexikoma paid $4.60 after completing nine furlongs in 1:48.19.
