Younger Horses Prevail at Rosecroft on Wednesday
While most of the cards at Rosecroft Raceway are filled with aging, veteran campaigners who still have the potential to display some youthful vigor, Wednesday's card at the Maryland five-eighths mile oval was actually highlighted by a trio of sophomores who appear to have potential for a bright future.
In the second race on the card, Ei Ei O (Brian Burton) rallied from well off the pace to post an 11-length victory in a conditioned event for trotters by covering the distance in a superb 1:55 flat. A sophomore son of pacing sire Cam's Rocket owned, bred and trained by Richard Hans of Goo Goo Gaa Gaa fame - another son of Cam's Rocket - Ei Ei O recorded his second straight sharp score and now looms a serious player in the upcoming Maryland Sire Stakes and Maryland Standardbred Race Fund events for three-year-old colt & gelding trotters.
Then several races later on the card, Secret Zette (David Hill, III) notched the first victory of her young career when she benefited from a pocket trio and prevailed in 1:58 in another conditioned event for younger trotters. Owned and trained by Gary White, Secret Zette was completely unraced at age two but dazzled in a qualifier in 1:59.2 in her first try behind the gate last month, broke in her official career debut then scored in her second outing. White purchased the sophomore trotting filly for only $7500 at the Meadowlands sale.

A sophomore daughter of Art Director driven and trained by Dalious for The Wiz Kids Stable, Heart Crusher had been unable to find the winner's circle in her first 12 outings while often facing rivals in the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund elims. She will likely head to Harrington Raceway for the second round of DSBF action with the hopes of earning a spot in the $100,000 final or at least $20,000 consolation on Governor's Day this summer.
Speaking of Harrington, the Delaware half-mile oval will kick off its spring meet on Monday with the main events on the calendar being the Governor's Day card in late July and then $150,000 Robert Quillen Memorial on the third Monday in September. Many of the participants who will likely arrive for the Quillen five months from now will clash in the $530,000 George Morton Levy Series final at Yonkers Raceway on Saturday night. McWicked drew the rail, but Missile J, Somewhere In L A and defending Levy hero Bit Of A Legend N will be among the serious contenders for the title this spring.
