Stakes Preview - Quarter Finals of the Orange Park Derby on Friday January 25, 2012

January 24th, 2013

In the second round of the Derby, Red Oak Kennel certainly made their presence felt with victories in 3 out of the 7 races. Gett It Going, Safe At Home and WW's Untwisted were Red Oak's winners.

Stubbornest greyhound of the week award has to go to WW's Untwisted in the 7th race in Round 2 of the Orange Park Derby. She was - literally - hounded by Gs Tegan all the way around the track, but just wouldn't give in. Her tenacity brought her a win by a neck over the just as determined, but not quite as fast, Gs Tegan.

There were some upsets and some big prices on 3 of the winners. D'Bull's Come On just nipped Pat C Sassy at the wire in the 4th race and paid $44.40 to win! Royal Response paid $33.60 in the 9th. And in the 11th, Pat C First Time rewarded her backers with $20.60 for the win. I noticed that the winners were about evenly split between midtrack and rail runners , which makes it harder to handicap this route series. A big track bias for the inside or midtrack would certainly help, but it doesn't look like we'll get one.

There are four races in Friday night's quarter finals.

In the 7th race, #4 WW's Untwisted and #2 Royal Response will go head to head, and I like Royal Response to win, if he can get out early enough and get the rail. He does run his best races from the inside, although GS Grace in the 1 box, may have something to say about who gets the rail. #5 Pat C Abash has good position for this distance and although not in as good position, #6 KK Swiftblade can pour it on when he's in form.

In the 9th, #3 Gett It Going, with an 8 length victory and a winning time of 37.74 looks like the one they'll all be chasing. My guess is that she'll be first over the finish line.

In the 11th, #8, Slick, looks tough from the outside box, but if #2 Safe At Home manages to get situated midtrack, he might be in the mix. I'd like him better from the 8 box though.

In the 15th race, we have #2 Gs Cosmo, the only undefeated entrant in this series. Cosmo loves the rail and he should get it. Looking at his last race, with a win time of 37.44 and a 10 1/2 length win margin over the rest of the pack, it's pretty hard not to like him to win. For exotics, I like him with # 6 Pat C Sassy and #8 WSR Hunker Down.
