Stakes Races on Tap at The Meadowlands on Saturday May 18th

May 17th, 2013

On Saturday, Meadowlands will run the finals of the Arthur J. Cutler Memorial Stakes, the $100,000 Meadowlands Maturity for 4 year olds, and the 1st leg of the NJ Sire Stakes. There will be a lot of good betting opportunities on the card and lots of good racing action also.

The late Rocknroll Hanover's colts are well represented in the sire stakes with 6 entries in the 4th race. Another prominent sire, Western Ideal, has 3 of his colts in the running in the 4th. The likely favorite is Rockin Amadeus, , with Yannick Gingras in the 3 post, winner of last year's Breeders Crown Sire Stakes for 2 year olds.

His trainer, Jimmy Takter, knows how to get a win off a layoff, and Rockin Amadeus has had an extra qualifier to tighten him, which makes him pretty dangerous in this field. In spite of the poor post position and long odds, I'm going to back #7 Giggity Fool for second or third in this one. And I'll take #5 Let's Rock Together for an exotic bet also.

In Race 6, the final of the Walter J. Cutler Memorial, I think that the most impressive horse in the race is Sevruga, who has managed to be in the exacta 8 out of 9 times, in spite of the fact that he's had outside posts for all of those races. This guy just can't catch a break, but that doesn't stop him from giving his all in every race. Maybe this time?

Trying to stop him will be Mister Herbie, Modern Family and My MVP, all able to compete at this level as evidenced by their speed numbers and class. I'm wondering if Sevruga can carry his speed to the wire this time like he did four races ago at a decent price.

Race 9, a NJ sire stakes race, has Emeritus Maximus at 9-5 in the 1 post coupled with the 1A Always There, who will run from the 3 post. Wake Up Peter at 8-5 in the 2 post was the runner up in the Breeders Cup Sire Stakes, second to Rockin Amadeus, which might explain his odds. I wouldn't count out #4 Rocnrolwilneverdie, who loves this track with a win and four seconds out of 6 races here.

The competition is fierce in the 10th race for the Meadowlands Maturity. How in the world can you handicap a race with Bolt the Duer (off very good qualifying races),  Hurrikane Kingcole, Hillbilly Hanover, Sweet Lou and Warrawee Needy? Maybe by taking a closer look at #7 Domethatagain, back with Erv Miller and Tim Tetrick and with 3 wins at Meadowlands. Or Dynamic Youth who can close like crazy if given the chance.

In Race 11, the fillies get a chance to show their stuff in the sire stakes. I Luv The Nightlife is at 2-1 with Tim Tetrick in the 4 post. A newcomer to The Meadowlands, but judging by her qualifiers, she's taken to the track just fine. Jerseylicious, Weiss Stakes winner at Pocono is at 4-1 and has the 11 post to contend with, but that shouldn't be too difficult for Corey Callahan. Miss Caila J Fra, Panera Hanover and JK Letitgo are horses I'll be using in exotics.

The races start at 7:15 on Saturday. Safe trips and good racing luck to all the drivers and horses.
