Trainers to watch at Woodbine Mohawk Park
Keeping up with trainer records is important for bettors at any harness meet, but at Woodbine Mohawk Park it is essential to get the best prices for horses hitting the board.
We keep our eyes on high win percentage trainers that the public often dismisses.
These trainers are not on streaks. They consistently pick up purse money with their entries and that supports big exotic prices, as well as strong win prices.
This weekend we'll focus on trainers Jean Tourigny and Anthony Montini, who have six horses entered for Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5. The members of the sextet are good for win bets but also should be included in exotic combos.
Jean Tourigny
Tourigny is the son of retired trainer Leo Tourigny. Jean has had much success on the Ontario circuit, after he raced in his home province of Quebec. As of this writing, he has a 23% win rate.
Dec. 4
Race 1: Last week, #2 Zar E Ip raced on the outside for three calls at 45-1.
Race 4: At 4-1, #1 Jimbelina never left the 2 hole and finished second last time out.
Race 6: Living up to 30-1 odds, #8 Kounnis raced poorly last time out, which should keep the odds juicy.
Anthony Montini
Montini has been training standardbreds for 20 years. He is a native of Ontario, where his father used to take him to the racetrack instead of the hockey arena and racing got in his blood. As of this writing, he has a 25% win rate.
Dec. 4
Race 11: Finishing sixth last time out, only a length back from the winner, #1 Tuapeka Jessie N was 8-1.
Dec. 5
Race 8: Third among three at the wire, #4 Revolt, was beaten by a neck at 7-2 last time out.
Race 10: Hanging for two calls, #5 Rockme Rollme showed good speed at 5-1 and got caught.
