Something For Doc Leaves It Til Late to Win the Open Handicap at Yonkers

For three-quarters of Saturday night's Yonkers $35K Open Handicap, Matt Kakaley and Something For Doc were just chillin' at the rail. They watched, seemingly unconcerned, while Tobago Cays with Jim Pantaleano in the bike led with panels of 27.1 and 57. As they neared the three-quarter post, bettors who had the 3-4 favorite were probably thinking that they'd made the wrong choice, as Roadway went first over, with Electrofire hot on his heels.

But it was then that Something For Doc decided that he'd had enough of being passed and being behind the leader. He emerged just in time to wheel down the lane and win by a head in 1:53.1. Electrofire was second and Tobago Cays hung on for third. This is the third win for Something for Doc in four starts this year.

Breaks Cost Favorites the Win and Longshots Pay Off in Singer Memorial Second Round at The Meadowlands

Who could imagine that both favorites - Windsun Galliano and Sequin Hanover - would go offstride, leaving the field open for No Less Than Magic to win at 30-1? Well, anyone who has watched trotters for any length of time knows that even the best can break, especially under the pressure of a big race with big purses at stake.

The same thing happened with Helios in the second division when he made a break at the top of the stretch, while the favorite, Real Babe, just never got going well and then faded in the stretch. Volare De Vie took advantage of this and wheeled over the finish line in 1:55.1 and paid $69.

The final of the Singer Memorial Trot will take place next Saturday. And don't forget that the first round of the Junior Trendsetter Series, which was rescheduled because of a blizzard, will go on Friday of this week.
