2015 Breeders' Cup BRIS Speed & Class Report

James Scully

October 24th, 2015

Using BRIS Speed ratings on dirt and BRIS Class ratings on turf, brisnet.com has assembled a Speed/Class rating report for the 2015 Breeders’ Cup.

Top contenders in eight of the 13 Breeders’ Cup races (excluding 2-year-old events and the TwinSpires Turf Sprint) are listed below, with the numbers of the last five race winners included:

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah ranks seventh based on last-out Speed rating, registering a 100 for a Travers runner-up effort that snapped an eight-race win streak, but the 109 Haskell Invitational Speed figure three starts back is on par with recent Classic winners.

The Distaff shapes up as a highly competitive race, with little separating the nine fillies and mares listed above. Only three -- Wedding Toast, Frivolous and Sheer Drama -- have managed to post a triple-digit BRIS Speed twice in the last three outings.

TwinSpires Sprint

Work All Week (2014)

106 (1st Iowa Sprint)

Work All Week’s last two Speed ratings (94 & 96) were a departure from previous Sprint winners, who earned 100+ numbers in either one or both starts, but his 106 three starts previously proved to be an indicator as he posted a 19-1 upset.

Three horses – Favorite Tale, Ivan Fallunovalot and Wild Dude – have registered triple-digit numbers in all three preps.

Karakontie posted a 30-1 upset last year but had excuses in his two previous outings, with the 1 5/16-mile French Derby being too long a distance and an e`xtremely troubled trip in the Prix de la Foret. His 121 three starts previously proved to be more telling.

Trainer Andre Fabre has a strong one-two punch with the 3-year-old colt Make Believe, who registered an outstanding 124.1 Class rating for his Prix de la Foret victory last-out; and the 5-year-old mare Esoterique, who received a big number (123.8) for a Group 1 tally two starts back. There is plenty of parity among the rest.
