$600,000 Champion of Champions on Saturday night

Defending champion Heza Dasha Fire will compete in Saturday's $600,00 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos.

While the draw will not take place until Wednesday afternoon, the excitement is building for this year's edition of the 440-yard championship. Much attention will go to 2015 AQHA World Champion Heza Dasha Fire, who capped off his brilliant 3-year-old season with a victory in last year’s Champion of Champions.

His rivals will include He Looks Hot, who qualified with a victory in the 2016 Vessels Maturity winner He Looks Hot; Ajs High, who defeated a full field at Los Alamitos in the Grade 1, Bank of America Challenge Championship on October 29; Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap winner Sass Me Blue; Los Alamitos Super Derby winner Big Lew and qualifiers from the  Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trials, which were contested at Los Alamitos three weeks ago.  Zoomin For Spuds, Militarist, Heat Warning, Rite Regal and Forget It clinched the five guaranteed berths to the Champion of Champions.

Mr Jet Moore won the inaugural running of the Champion of Champions in 1972. The list of past winners includes Refrigerator, Tailor Fit, Slm Big Daddy, Wave Carver, Jess You and I, Freaky, Apollitical Jess , Good Reason SA and Last to Fire.  While it is not guaranteed, winning the Champion of Champions has clinched the AQHA world champion title for many outstanding Quarter Horses.

 

Officials at Los Alamitos will conduct a special post-position draw at approximately 2:30 p.m. (Pacific) on Wednesday, December 7.  They will also draw for the $1.9 million Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, which will run on Sunday, December 11. Racing fans can tune into TVG, as they will televise the draws for both Grade 1 stakes.
