Pool 2 of the 2021 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) closed Sunday evening with familiar faces at the top of the market. “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” remained the overall favorite at 9-5, and the top two individual choices from Pool 1, Life Is Good and Essential Quality, once again held those positions.
But the dynamic surrounding Life Is Good was different this time. While the Bob Baffert trainee was a big market mover at 5-1 in Pool 1 over Thanksgiving weekend, he was installed as the 6-1 individual favorite in Pool 2, and closed at 7-1. Between the two pools, the big debut winner handled a stretch-out to two turns in the Sham (G3). So far following the pattern of Baffert’s record-tying sixth Kentucky Derby winner, Authentic – another son of Into Mischief – Life Is Good is slated for the Mar. 6 San Felipe (G2).
Essential Quality, last seen capping an unbeaten season in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), held steady at 8-1. That was his closing price in Pool 1 as well as his morning line in Pool 2. A lock to be named champion 2-year-old male at Thursday night’s Eclipse Awards, the Brad Cox pupil continues to gear up for his reappearance.
Cox’s Caddo River advertised himself with a romp in Friday’s Smarty Jones at Oaklawn Park, opening day of Pool 2, and his 30-1 morning line tumbled to 13-1. He’d been a 27-1 shot in Pool 1. Baffert’s Concert Tour, a newcomer to Pool 2 after a sharp debut score at Santa Anita Jan. 15, opened at 15-1 and closed at 16-1. Keepmeinmind, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile third who broke through in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), repeated his 19-1 odds from Pool 1.
Aside from Caddo River, another gaining steam was the Todd Pletcher-trained Prime Factor. The impressive debut winner at Gulfstream Park Dec. 12 was added as an individual option in Pool 2, and his odds shortened from a morning line of 30-1 to 21-1.
